Nike Basketball is bringing back a classic shoe from the early 2000s: the Air Zoom Huarache 2K4. It’s returning first in a striking “Knicks” color scheme, evoking memories of the 2004 basketball season. Although there was talk of a perfect recreation of Penny Hardaway’s special edition shoe from that time, the version available in stores will have a few subtle differences.
As a Penny collector, I was so hyped when I first heard about these shoes – finally, a chance to own a pair he actually wore during his time at Madison Square Garden! But, according to Sneaker Bar Detroit, new photos are showing they won’t have the classic ‘1 Cent’ logo on the heel. It looks like instead of a true player edition retro, they’re going with a more general design based on the team’s colors and style. It’s a bit of a letdown, honestly, but still a cool shoe.
Even without the Penny logo, this sneaker perfectly captures the feel of early 2000s basketball. It uses a striking combination of black, royal blue, and orange to evoke New York’s basketball culture. The Huarache 2K4 is still well-regarded for its performance and innovative design, featuring a sleek upper, a bold ankle collar, and comfortable Zoom Air cushioning that blended the styles of the Kobe Bryant and Penny Hardaway eras.
While some dedicated Penny collectors might miss the PE branding, the shoe’s perfect color scheme and the fact that the 2K4 is back after all these years should still generate a lot of excitement. This sneaker is a key part of Nike Basketball’s legacy, and bringing it back will be a huge event for those who remember it from its original days on the court.
