The idea of a hero having a specific, ultimate enemy – like Batman and the Joker – is common. While Deathstroke is often considered Nightwing’s version of the Joker, recent storylines suggest that might be changing.
Dick Grayson, also known as a member of the Bat-Family, recently faced a new villain who resembles the Joker with his clown-like look and frightening cruelty. But this new enemy, called The Zanni, is actually a much greater danger than he appears.
The Zanni Is A Powerful Cosmic Entity
The Zanni, a new villain created by Dan Watters and Dexter Soy, first appeared in DC’s Nightwing, issue #119. He shares a similar look with The Joker – pale skin, matching gloves, and a ruffled collar – but Nightwing might find this enemy even more challenging than Batman did with the Joker.
The Zanni is a magical being, originating from the same mysterious realm as other strange DC characters like Bat-Mite and Mr. Mxyzptlk. He began as a simple idea – the earliest forms of performance art, like prehistoric shadow puppets – and gradually evolved into a powerful, god-like cosmic entity. Now, he secretly fuels violence and corruption throughout the world.
Nightwing first noticed the Zanni when children started vanishing after he left Batman. It was discovered that the Zanni was using music to attract them to a strange, other-dimensional circus he built, called “Cirque du Sin.”
Pennywise, the terrifying, child-stealing clown from Stephen King’s It, is even more frightening than The Joker. But, similar to Batman’s history with the Joker, Nightwing’s connection to this new villain is deeper and goes further back in time than he thinks.
The Zanni Is Connected To Nightwing’s Past
The Joker is often most compelling when his origins are a mystery. However, one popular interpretation, found in the 1988 comic Batman: The Killing Joke, suggests Batman witnessed an event at Ace Chemicals where a man fell into toxic waste, leading to the insanity that defined the Joker before he even met his greatest enemy.
Though Dick Grayson only recently learned about The Zanni, this ancient being has been watching him since his days as Robin. This is shown in Nightwing #122 through a flashback where young Dick, as Robin, and Batman investigate a circus linked to a series of disappearances.
That’s when things got really interesting! Robin meets this girl, Olivia Pearce, and I instantly saw so much of him in her. She had a tough childhood, just like him, and she’s an amazing trapeze artist – seriously skilled. It turns out she was raised by this powerful, but kinda creepy, guy called The Zanni, and that’s when he first starts paying attention to Robin too. It’s like, both of them have these complicated pasts and were taken in by someone with a hidden dark side, which is a really cool connection!
Olivia Pearce became a criminal who built weapons specifically to defeat superheroes. She once created a uniform for Dick Grayson with special “smart fibers” that tracked all of his fighting moves. Using this information, she designed her own similar uniform – with a red color scheme instead of blue and a flipped version of Nightwing’s emblem – allowing her to perfectly copy his fighting style and become a kind of opposite to Nightwing, all while working for The Zanni.
The villain, Zanni, has been acting in ways that strongly recall tactics used by the Joker. A key example is a shocking scene in Nightwing #132 where an invisible Zanni seemingly kills Olivia Pearce on live TV with a comical weapon, making it look like Nightwing committed the murder and damaging his public image. This echoes a famous moment from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, where the Joker dies in a way designed to frame Batman.
While that event does mark the end of the Joker’s chaos, the Zanni is just beginning his, and things are likely to get much harder for Nightwing and Bludhaven before he’s dealt with.
