Nifemi Marcus-Bello Transforms Copper into Art in ‘Oríkì (Act III): Whispers of a Trail’
I’m thrilled to share that Marta Gallery is showcasing Nifemi Marcus-Bello‘s latest work, “Oríkì (Act III): Whispers of a Trail“. As part of the “Oríkì” series, this exhibition in Lagos takes us on a fascinating journey, exploring the complexities behind material extraction, refinement, and acquisition, with copper as its central theme.
Copper, which is richly found in central Africa’s Copperbelt region, covering northern Zambia and southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, seems surprisingly scarce across the continent due to high global demand and intricate supply networks. Despite being essential for various industries, a significant portion of the extracted copper is shipped out for processing and then brought back at a higher price, highlighting the economic conundrums that Marcus-Bello explores in his research.
In the creation of “Whispers of a Trail“, Marcus-Bello has designed four versatile sculptures that serve multiple functions such as tables, seating, and lighting. Each piece showcases the adaptability and durability of copper while emphasizing the intricate methods involved in its application. The “Daybed” boasts a single-mold cast base which smoothly transitions from a chair, bonded by a common backrest and adorned with a candle holder. The “Headrest” is a curvaceous copper structure intended to support both sitting and reclining positions. The “Side Table” is a copper surface suspended on grey bricks, its radiance reminiscent of a newly coined coin’s gleam. Lastly, the “Charcoal Lamp” combines slender constructions of copper and repurposed American pine, with the darkened wood representing Africa’s dwindling ebony resources.
Marcus-Bello artfully blends historical context with sculptural practicality by shaping copper into a tool for narration. This unique craftsmanship sheds light on the economic ties and resource extraction across the continent. His creations provocatively question traditional views of raw materials, emphasizing their rich history and cultural importance.
Furthermore, the artist is prominently displayed in the newly launched exhibition at MoMA, titled “Pirouette: Pivotal Moments in Design“. This exhibition, orchestrated by Paola Antonelli, showcases revolutionary designs that have significantly transformed various industries and left an indelible impact on our daily lives.
