Despite being praised for her portrayal of the aging movie icon Norma Desmond, originally played by Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard, former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger has not been successful in generating any profits for the producers of the Broadway adaptation.

The creator of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, which ended its 10-month run in July, has astonishingly disclosed that the production incurred a loss of approximately $6 million (£4.5 million) despite consistently full audiences and substantial box office earnings of $1.9 million during its final weeks.

JJ Powell shared with me that despite being a major success and winning the season, the show ended up losing approximately 40% of its total $15 million investment. This loss included $4 million, which was Jamie Lloyd’s share as the director.

The statistics are striking, and regrettably, they appear to be a persistent pattern for productions moving from the West End to Broadway.

The popular Cabaret show at the Kit Kat Club, currently running and successful in London, will be closing down on Broadway in October, with an estimated financial loss of around $25 million (approximately £18.5 million) in total.

In simpler terms, Powell states that due to high operational costs, management issues, labor unions, an excessive focus on making a profit, and expensive star-studded productions, ticket prices are skyrocketing, making it difficult for ordinary people to enjoy entertainment that was intended for the public at large.

‘Top-tier celebrities reap huge profits, but other actors are seeking alternative careers due to limited opportunities. Regrettably, for those who aren’t at the top of the production hierarchy, influence or advancement is scarce.’

This version maintains the original meaning and flows more naturally in everyday language.

Neptune Productions, led by Tony and Olivier award-winning director Powell, has successfully staged popular shows such as Merrily We Roll Along featuring Daniel Radcliffe from Harry Potter. However, he mentioned that earnings from these productions have been delayed. Regarding Broadway, he expressed concern, stating, “The system is flawed, and unless we address the issue swiftly and make a strong stand, there may be no theatre left to operate, and few artists willing to persevere.
