Nicole Richie and Joel Madden’s 18-year-old daughter, Kate, recently posted about her fun time at the Coachella music festival.
Kate, formerly known as Harlow, shared photos of her festival outfits while having fun with friends at the Indio festival, where she also watched Justin Bieber perform.
Kate recently shared photos with her 13,600 Instagram followers showing off a dramatic new look: she’s traded her blonde hair for a striking jet black color.
Nicole, 44, and Joel, 47, are parents to Kate and son Sparrow, 16.
In January, Nicole publicly shared her oldest child’s name for the very first time while celebrating a significant moment in their life.
She shared a heartwarming post on Instagram celebrating her daughter, featuring old photos. Fans noticed something new, though – her daughter is now using her middle name, Kate, instead of her first name.
Joel discussed Kate’s decision to change her name last month while on the Dumb Blonde podcast hosted by BunnieXO.
He said: ‘She’s been going by her middle name since she was in like, first grade.
She made the decision herself. After a day at school, whether it was coming home normally or at an open house event, the teacher told us Kate was thriving and was a very kind student.
We were confused when someone asked for “Kate,” because that’s not what we usually call her. Apparently, she’d introduced herself that way. We asked if she was now going by her middle name, and when we got home, we confirmed with her. She said she liked being called Kate at school.
He said that around age seven his eldest child opted to go by Kate instead of Harlow.
The musician explained it wasn’t something to worry about, and actually thought it was pretty neat. He added that nobody even talked about it – it just wasn’t a problem.
He explained that people generally know her as Kate, so being called Harlow would immediately reveal someone doesn’t know her well.
Joel went on to discuss how proud he is of his two children.
He said: ‘I always say my kids have made it so easy to be a dad. They are such easy people.
Being their dad hasn’t felt like a hardship at all. I truly feel blessed to have these kids – they’re wonderful, easygoing, and bring so much joy to my life. They always make me smile.
Nicole has shared that she tells her teenage children about her own rebellious youth. She’s been open about raising them and letting them know about her experiences as a teenager.
I vividly remember being a teenager—it feels like just yesterday! And my kids are aware of everything I did back then,” she told Glamour.
I realized even before my children were born that it was important to be open and honest with them about my true self, and surprisingly, that’s been incredibly liberating.
She explained that she didn’t want her children to find out something significant about her unexpectedly. She’s always prioritized open and honest communication with them, and she hopes they feel comfortable doing the same with her.
