Nicole Richie and Joel Madden’s daughter Harlow reveals dramatic transformation and new identity on 18th birthday

Nicole Richie‘s daughter, Harlow Madden, is turning 18 and is marking the occasion with a fresh new style and a name change.

The woman, who is naturally a brunette, recently dyed her hair a very dark black and is now using her middle name, Kate Madden.

It’s unknown when Kate—born Harlow Winter Kate Madden—started going by her middle name, but she’s had her current hairstyle for at least a few months now.

Nicole shared a photo of her teenage daughter on Instagram Sunday while celebrating her birthday, drawing attention to their similar appearances and name.

Kate, recently seen with honey-blonde hair, now has long, jet-black hair that falls below her chest.

The socialite tagged her daughter’s Instagram account, @katemaddenn. 

Nicole shared a photo and wrote, ‘Happy 18th birthday to my favorite person, @katemaddennn! I love you!’

The Daily Mail reached out to Kate’s mother for a statement, but she hasn’t responded yet.

The former reality show star, 44, shares Kate and son Sparrow, 16, with husband Joel Madden, 46.

In 2024, Nicole said raising her kids as teenagers was her ‘favorite stage’ of parenting so far.

Appearing on the Today Show, she explained that she has a vivid memory of being sixteen years old, and it’s remarkable how easily she can recall that time in her life.

As a mom, I always tell my daughter that I totally get what she’s going through with her friends. Honestly, I find myself saying, ‘Oh honey, I remember exactly that happening to me!’ There was a girl named Laila Heckmath back in the day who used to pull similar things, and it’s amazing how those childhood friend dynamics seem to repeat themselves. It’s a good reminder that everyone goes through similar experiences, and it helps me connect with her and offer advice based on my own past.

‘I remember first and last names, so it’s fun. It’s wild. And just the best.’

Nicole and Joel got married on December 11, 2010. They already had two children: Kate, born on January 11, 2008, and Sparrow, born on September 9, 2009.

The teenagers appeared on the red carpet for the first time at the premiere of their mother’s movie, ‘Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead,’ which was released in 2024.

Oh my gosh, you guys, she talked about it! She actually talked about her kids being at the ‘Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead’ premiere on ‘Today’! She said literally everyone was there, the whole family! It was just…so sweet, she said! I’m seriously melting! It’s amazing to know she cherishes those moments with them so much.

They’re teenagers, so they were pretty relaxed about everything, but they seemed genuinely happy to be there. They even told me they thought I did a good job in the movie, which was nice to hear. I definitely appreciated that!

Richie, known for her lively social life in the 2000s, has said she wants to be open and honest with her kids about her past experiences.

She told Glamour that they were fully aware of her past actions. She’d realized from the start she needed to be completely honest with them, and surprisingly, she’s found it liberating.

I didn’t want my children to suddenly learn something surprising about me. I’ve always tried to be upfront and honest with them, and I hope they feel they can be the same with me.
