Nicole Kidman reunites with onscreen sister Sandra Bullock in Practical Magic 2 first look

Nicole Kidman reunited with her former co-star Sandra Bullock on the set of Practical Magic 2

This past Friday, Kidman posted a preview video on Instagram showing her and her screen sibling for the first time on the set of the eagerly awaited sequel’s initial day of filming.

She shared a video of their embrace at an improvised graveyard, approximately thirty years following the initial filming of the first movie.

In the caption, she excitedly shared: ‘Our witches have returned! The Owens sisters begin filming today! #PracticalMagic’

In a previous role, both Kidman (age 58) and Bullock (age 60) appeared together in a movie adaptation of the popular 1998 novel by Alice Hoffman, titled “Practical Magic.” This story revolves around two enchanting sisters who are witches and embark on captivating magical escapades.

This news arrives several weeks following the celebrities posting about the upcoming supernatural sequel, scheduled for 2026. However, one of the film’s leading actresses has disclosed that she won’t be returning to her character in this new installment.

In the upcoming sequel, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock will once again play their characters, Gillian and Sally Owens, who are part of an extended family with a rich history of witchcraft.

In the 1998 movie version, the two sisters utilize their abilities to combat a spell that claims the lives of any men they develop feelings for.

The specifics about the plot for the second movie haven’t been disclosed as of now, but it appears that the tale might be drawn from a subsequent book within the Practical Magic series by the author.

In the next installment, both Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing will come back to play Aunt Jet and Aunt Fran Owens again.

In addition to the prominent actors, the lineup features up-and-coming talent Lee Pace, known for his role in “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” along with the veteran actress Joey King who was once a renowned child star.

Alongside Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod, Arya Stark herself, Maisie Williams, is set to join the cast as well.

In the upcoming sequel, it seems that one of the original cast members, Evan Rachel Wood, won’t make an appearance. She has recently explained to fans why they should not anticipate seeing her in this new installment.

37-year-old actress from Westworld, who has previously accused her former boyfriend Marilyn Manson of sexual abuse, shared on Instagram Stories that she didn’t make the decision to not play Kylie Owens, the eldest daughter of Sally Owens (Bullock), again on Saturday.

Wood clarified that he wasn’t approached for the Practical Magic sequel, but he voluntarily expressed his willingness to contribute, whether it was just a single scene or line.

She mentioned that they’re recasting, and expressed her apologies for any disappointment among the fans. It wasn’t something under her control or a decision she made. If it had been up to her, she would have gladly returned alongside her co-stars.

In the movie, following their father’s passing, Kylie, portrayed by Wood, and her little sister Antonia, played by Alexandra Artrip, move in with their aunts, who are acted by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest.

It’s thought that he might have been affected by a hex cast upon the witch family, which affects any man that the female members fall for romantically.

Yet, matters grow intricate for Kylie’s mom when she finds herself smitten by a fresh suitor (portrayed by Aidan Quinn). Meanwhile, Kidman’s character grapples with an ex-boyfriend who attempts to maintain his grip on her life even after death.

A while back this year, Kidman mentioned that she and Bullock had been looking forward to a potential sequel since filming the original movie about 26 years prior.

As a die-hard fan, I’d have to say that when we were crafting this masterpiece, there was no doubt in our minds that we would create another installment!

‘We’re so excited. Yes, yes, beyond excited. You heard our spell. We put out our spell already.’

The filmmakers responsible for the upcoming sequel, led by director Susanne Bier, expressed their excitement in a statement: ‘Twenty-five years ago, characters like Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet, and Aunt Franny leapt from Alice Hoffman’s cherished novel onto cinema screens worldwide. We are delighted to reunite the Owens family for another cinematic adventure, featuring Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly, and Xolo as they join us in this new chapter of our tale.’

Though the production has just kicked off, a release date has already been revealed.

Practical Magic 2 is set to premiere on September 18, 2026.
