Nicole de Boer understood she was a painful reminder for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine cast
As a long-time Trekkie who has witnessed the rise and fall of many a Starfleet crew member, I can say that the departure of Jadzia Dax left a void that was as vast as the cosmos itself. Terry Farrell’s portrayal of the character was nothing short of extraordinary, and her chemistry with Worf and Captain Sisko was undeniable.
The departure of Jadzia Dax left a profound impact on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fans. Her character was a key element in the narrative, shared a romantic relationship with Worf and forged an unbreakable bond as Captain Sisko’s dearest friend. It seemed nearly impossible for followers to cope with this sense of grief.
Terry Farrell, who portrayed Jadzia Dax, initially preferred to remain on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. She wished to continue her role if there was a possibility to cut down her screen time. However, the producers opted for a different course of action, leading to the character’s demise at the hands of Gul Dakat. This left both Worf and the rest of the Deep Space Nine crew heartbroken. Despite Jadzia’s departure, the producers chose to preserve the Dax character and maintain its connections with other characters in the series.
Nicole de Boer, who portrayed Ezri Dax during Deep Space Nine’s final season, joined the team. Despite being grateful for the role, as she shared with Heavy, she recognized the emotional toll it might have caused for the cast and crew, given that Terry Farrell was originally meant to play the part. However, it would have been hard to guess the depth of their feelings since they didn’t direct them towards de Boer. Instead, there was a swift and warm reception due to the symbolism of her character.
“They have so much love for Jadzia, and I am, although a painful reminder for them as well, there is an immediate welcoming because of that factor. You know, because they miss her so and I’m a connection for them. So, that made it easier for me. And really interesting too… I’m not saying it was easy to do it. I’m saying this whole fact of coming into a show later, it was so nice to have that connection, the same thing Ezri was going through… I can draw on this.”
When Renee de Boer joined Deep Space Nine, she took over a beloved character, and although she built her own fanbase, there are still many fans who wish to see Terry Farrell return as Jadzia Dax. Is it likely to happen? It’s unlikely, but both actresses could explore various roles within the Star Trek universe. It would be intriguing to see them act together, and we’d all prefer if they did so in a continuation of Deep Space Nine, should that ever be feasible.
