Nicolas Cage’s Son is Named After Superman: A True Fan’s Legacy!

In a somewhat intricate phase of his career as Superman, Nicolas Cage has such an ardent affection for the Man of Steel that one of his children bears the name connected with the Man of Tomorrow. Across various comic book personas, Cage has assumed diverse roles, such as Ghost Rider, animated and live-action Spider-Man Noir, and Big Daddy in Kick-Ass. Yet, it’s worth noting that he has portrayed not one but two unique versions of Superman, demonstrating his deep-seated admiration for the legendary DC superhero.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but reminisce about the time when Nicolas Cage nearly donned the cape and flew as Superman in the ’90s. Although he didn’t get to embody the Man of Steel in a standalone film, he has lent his voice to the character in animation and essentially played him in live-action at the tail end of the DCEU. However, the most telling demonstration of Nicolas Cage’s affection for Superman lies in the fact that he bestowed the name of the Kryptonian hero upon his second child.

Nicolas Cage Almost Played Superman In The 90s

Tim Burton’s Superman Lives

In the ’90s, it was planned for Tim Burton to direct Superman Lives with a script by Kevin Smith, starring Nicolas Cage as Superman. Despite the project moving into pre-production and Warner Bros. investing approximately 30 million dollars, the film was eventually halted and then cancelled due to the departures of Burton and Cage. By this time, Smith had already left the project, having been replaced when Burton became attached to it.

Despite some progress in pre-production such as costume fittings, additional casting, and set production, the documentary The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? revealed that the main cause for the film’s cancellation was the peculiar and frequent demands from producer Jon Peters. Among these demands were his refusal to allow Superman to fly, insistence on Lex Luthor having a robot dog to boost toy sales, and a strong preference for Superman battling a giant robotic spider instead.

In The 2000s, Nicolas Cage Named His Son After Superman

Kal-El Coppola Cage

Although the film “Superman Lives” never made it to the big screen, Nicolas Cage’s affection for Superman was undeniably strong. This was clearly shown when he named his second child born in 2005, Kal-El – a name that is significant as it is Superman’s original name from Krypton. Initially planning to call his son Kyle, Cage’s wife at the time suggested something more exotic, resulting in the choice of Kal-El. In an interview with Starpulse.com, Cage elaborated on his decision for this unique moniker.

Initially, my wife desired an uncommon yet lovely name, and at first, I suggested Kyle. However, she wanted something even more distinct and attractive. This reminded me of Superman’s original Kryptonian name, Kal-El. I wanted a name that signified goodness, was unique, and had an American origin – all three qualities. To me, it seemed like a beautiful name with a magical quality to it.

In the 2018 animated film “Teen Titans Go! to the Movies,” it’s interesting to note that Nicolas Cage, who goes by Kal-El Cage in real life, was chosen to voice Superman. Surprisingly, though, in a twist of fate, he was also cast alongside his father, voicing a young Bruce Wayne in a minor role.

Nicolas Cage’s Superman Dreams Finally Came True In 2023

A Brief (And Controversial) Superman Cameo in The Flash

It turns out that Nicolas Cage actually had a shot at portraying Superman in live-action, as depicted in 2023’s The Flash. This was hinted at towards the end of the critically disliked DCEU film, where Cage appeared as the ’80s-style Superman with long hair. In this scene, he observes the destruction of multiple universes and even engages in a battle against a giant robotic spider (a reference to Jon Peters’ demands). However, it’s important to note that this sequence is primarily computer-generated imagery (CGI), and the scenes involving Cage were not what was filmed when he was actually on set. Later, Cage himself admitted that the sequence wasn’t part of his actual filming during an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, echoing Tim Burton’s expressed frustrations about Cage’s cameo in The Flash.

In the movie scene I saw, I was battling a colossal spider. However, that’s not something I actually did. Something must have been mixed up because it wasn’t me. Frankly, I don’t believe it was generated by AI. Yet, Tim has expressed concerns about AI, as do I. It turns out it was computer-generated imagery (CGI) to make me appear younger and fight a spider. Again, that wasn’t something I did, which leaves me puzzled about the situation. Still, I understand where Tim is coming from. He’s referring to the misuse of artistic work, which I wholeheartedly agree with. In fact, I share his sentiments towards AI. To me, it feels inhumane and unnatural. There’s no aspect of kindness or compassion in artificial intelligence.

It appears that the appearance of Nicolas Cage in The Flash didn’t quite do justice to his past relationship with Superman. Maybe someday, we’ll see a revival of Superman Lives, be it as a comic or an animated series, as Kevin Smith has suggested. Regardless, it’s fascinating to know that Nicolas Cage is such a devoted fan of Superman, naming one of his children after this legendary superhero.
