Nicolas Cage revealed the unusual source of inspiration for his Spider-Noir character, and it’s quite a story. The acclaimed actor, known for his diverse roles over the past forty years, is famous for his unique acting style, which he calls “Nouveau Shamanic.” He recently shared that he developed a strange method to help him become Ben Reilly, also known as The Spider, for the role.
In a recent interview with Esquire, Nicolas Cage described his character as a blend of Humphrey Bogart and Bugs Bunny – seventy percent Bogart’s tough persona and thirty percent Bugs Bunny’s playful energy. He explained he approached the role by channeling both Mel Blanc’s comedic timing and Bogart’s signature sarcasm, ultimately making it a completely personal performance.
The animated film Spider-Noir takes place in 1930s New York and stars Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a struggling private detective who must confront his past after a personal loss, all while being the city’s only superhero. Cage drew heavily on Humphrey Bogart’s iconic film noir persona for his performance. Surprisingly, he also found inspiration in Bugs Bunny, admitting his approach was like “a spider trying to dress up as a human.” Cage seems to be combining the classic style of film noir with a chaotic, cartoonish energy, and he also used other human influences to fully embody the character.
You’ll notice other actors inspiring the performance, like James Cagney and Edward G. Robinson. However, when you compare Bogart to those around him, he’s strikingly different – almost like a character from a cartoon. The same thing is happening here, and it’s actually fantastic. He’s captivating and you can’t look away. That’s what makes him so charismatic; he had a completely unique voice and presence that felt larger than life.
This is a developing story…
