Spider-Man is definitely one of the most well-known superheroes ever, right up there with Superman and Batman. Like DC’s heroes, Spider-Man has been featured in many different versions and stories.
Since the early 2000s, three actors have famously played Spider-Man in movies: Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and now Tom Holland. Each actor has brought a distinct style to the character, earning them dedicated fans. Recently, Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man received praise from Nicolas Cage in a new interview with Complex.
Nicolas Cage Calls Andrew Garfield’s ‘Best Spider-Man in Cinema’
Nicolas Cage has experience with superhero roles, and now he’s playing Spider-Noir in the new Prime Video series. While he isn’t playing the traditional Peter Parker or reprising his voice role from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Cage understands the importance of honoring the history of the character.
While playing a game he wasn’t familiar with – called F, Marry, Kill – the actor was asked to pick his favorite and least favorite between Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland. He quickly chose Andrew Garfield as The Amazing Spider-Man, declaring him the best Spider-Man of the three.
Cage enthusiastically praised Garfield’s performance as Spider-Man, calling him a ‘marvelous actor’ and saying he did a ‘terrific job’.
He added that, for those who’ve played Peter Parker/Spider-Man more recently, Andrew Garfield was particularly impressive. He personally believes Garfield delivered the best performance as Spider-Man in any movie.
Andrew Garfield first played Spider-Man in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, a Sony film. He starred alongside Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Sally Field as Aunt May. The movie was directed by Marc Webb and written by a team including James Vanderbilt, Alvin Sargent, and Steve Kloves. While it cost an estimated $200-230 million to make, it earned $758.7 million worldwide, making it a financial success.
A sequel was released in 2014 and earned around $716.9 million, costing between $200 and $293 million to make. While the movies got generally mixed reactions from critics, plans for a third film never materialized.
Garfield returned as Spider-Man in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home, alongside Tobey Maguire, who also played his version of the character. It’s currently unknown if Garfield will appear in the next Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir Is a Hit
This new show centers around Ben Reilly, a laid-back private investigator played by Cage. His comfortable life is disrupted when he’s pulled back into the world of superheroism by dangerous criminals, terrifying creatures, and a mysterious woman, forcing him to once again become New York’s sole protector.
The film is receiving widespread acclaim, boasting a 91% approval rating from critics and a nearly identical 92% score from audiences. Notably, Spider-Noir is proving incredibly popular on Prime Video, currently ranking as the platform’s most-watched title.
Spider-Noir is streaming on Prime Video.
