Nicolas Cage has “zero idea” whether long-awaited sequel to his ’90s classic will happen

Nicolas Cage has dashed hopes for a sequel to his hit 1997 film, Face/Off. He says he genuinely doesn’t know if the long-awaited project will ever be made.

The film featured Nicolas Cage and John Travolta as a dangerous terrorist, Castor Troy, and the FBI agent trying to stop him, Sean Archer. A risky surgery swaps their faces, and they end up living each other’s lives – leading to a lot of trouble.

A follow-up to the action thriller was first announced in 2021, with Simon Barrett writing the script with the director, Adam Wingard. But in 2024, Wingard said the writers’ strike caused major delays, and he has now left the project.

During a recent interview with Variety, Nicolas Cage discussed the status of the film after the director left the project. He shared that he’s still in contact with the director, but doesn’t know why they decided to leave.

I had a really good lunch with Adam at the Smoke House in Burbank, and we had a great time talking. We have a lot in common,” he explained.

He seemed to genuinely enjoy the experience. I believe I helped him feel more free creatively – I started the process, and he built on my ideas, taking them in his own direction, Cage explained.
