Nicolas Cage ‘Can’t Think Of A Better Actor’ Than One Co-Star, But I Wouldn’t Have Guessed Who In A Hundred Tries

Nicolas Cage has shared the screen with many legendary actors – Sean Penn, Meryl Streep, Willem Dafoe, Holly Hunter, John Malkovich, Nicole Kidman, Ed Harris, and Tilda Swinton, to name a few. He even acted alongside Cher during her Oscar-winning performance in the 1987 film Moonstruck. Despite working with such talented stars, Cage surprisingly doesn’t consider any of them the best actor he’s ever worked with. He reserves that honor for rising star Isla Johnston.

Nicolas Cage recently worked with a rising English actress on the new horror film, The Carpenter’s Son, and told EW he was very impressed with her. To emphasize his experience working with talented actors, he also mentioned his Adaptation co-star during the interview.

I honestly can’t imagine working with a more talented actor – and that includes someone as phenomenal as Meryl Streep.

The new film features a particularly demanding role for actress Johnston. Directed and written by Lotfy Nathan, The Carpenter’s Son stars Nicolas Cage as the father of Jesus, and Johnston portrays Satan. She’s previously appeared in The Queen’s Gambit, where she played a young version of Anya Taylor Joy’s character in flashback scenes, and the Apple TV+ series Invasion from 2021.

I’m so thrilled for Isla! Nicolas Cage clearly sees amazing potential in her – he even mentioned how excited he is about her landing the lead role in Baz Luhrmann’s new film, Jehanne d’Arc. He was talking about what makes working with Isla so special, and I’m really eager to hear what he has to say.

I truly believe she’s destined to become a major star, a real icon in film. And her role as Joan of Arc? It’s just perfect for her. She has this incredible gaze – it’s almost unsettling, like she can see right through you, into the very core of who you are. It sounds crazy when I say it out loud, but it’s true!

Wondering what Nicholas Cage thought of his young co-star’s performance? You can now rent or buy The Carpenter’s Son – featuring Noah Jupe and FKA Twigs – online. While we anticipate Isla Johnston’s portrayal of Joan of Arc, Cage has several projects on the horizon, including the Spider-Noir streaming series, a sequel to Lord of War called Lords of War, and a biopic about football great John Madden.
