Nicola Coughlan reveals her mother was ‘so mad’ about her Bridgerton sex scenes ‘she wouldn’t go to the screening with her’

As a dedicated follower of all things entertainment, I must confess that I was thoroughly captivated by Nicola Coughlan‘s journey in Bridgerton, particularly her portrayal of Penelope Featherington. Her confession about her mother’s disapproval of her steamy scenes is quite relatable, isn’t it? I mean, who among us hasn’t had a parent or two squirming in their seats during our most dramatic on-screen moments!

Nicola Coughlan disclosed that her mother was extremely disappointed over her Bridgerton intimate scenes, and as a result, chose not to accompany her at the screening event.

On The Graham Norton Show on Friday, the 37-year-old actress openly admitted her secret, sharing the stage with ex-James Bond actor Daniel Craig as well as Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin.

In a conversation with Graham, who is 61 years old, the actress from Derry Girls shared that it felt odd for her to portray an adult character, given that she was only 35 at the time.

She, too, expressed that she underwent an immersion by fire when she assumed the role of the romantic lead in the third season of Bridgerton.

The explicit scene where Nicola’s character Penelope Featherington disrobed and engaged in intimate acts with Luke Newton (Colin Bridgerton) left Nicola’s mother astonished to such an extent that she decided not to attend the screening of the series along with her.

She told the chat show host: ‘I was 35 and I realised I had never played an adult, and I was like, “How do I do this?”.

‘It was then so weird having to play the romantic lead and getting up to sexy things. 

I didn’t accompany my mother to the movie screening because she was upset over those scenes, acting like it was all my doing.

The third installment of Bridgerton was eagerly anticipated as being the “hottest season ever,” and it certainly lived up to expectations, leaving fans thoroughly satisfied.

In this show, a significant moment stood out – the one that depicted the romantic progression between Penelope and Colin. This specific scene was particularly thrilling.

In this clear-cut moment, Penelope found solace in Colin’s arms following an argument with her mother over her engagement. It was during this tender exchange that they shared a kiss.

Previously, an actress responded to a female reporter who stated she was “brave” for accepting the role, by countering her statement.

In response to others perceiving her statement as a subtle criticism, Nicola cleverly rephrased by stating: “It’s tough because I feel that women like me, those with more voluptuous figures and ideal proportions, don’t often have the opportunity to see themselves represented onscreen enough!

‘And I’m very proud as a member of the perfect breasts community. I hope you enjoy seeing them.’

Previously in the conversation, it was disclosed that Nicola needed to refresh her understanding of Doctor Who as she hadn’t seen the series prior to being cast in the Christmas special alongside Ncuti Gatwa.

The Harlots actress added that she would love to be asked back and had an excellent time on set.

She mentioned that she couldn’t share any information with you, not due to confidentiality reasons, but simply because she wasn’t aware of the situation.

As a native of Ireland, I hadn’t experienced it during my childhood. When I landed the role, I turned to Wikipedia for information – it felt as if I were reading War and Peace, filled with complexities such as monsters and time travel that left me utterly bewildered.
