As a movie buff with a deep love for Latin music and a soft spot for Puerto Rico, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions reading about Nicky Jam’s decision to rescind his endorsement of Donald Trump. Growing up in the vibrant streets of San Juan, I’ve always admired artists like Nicky Jam who have used their platform to uplift and empower our community.
On Wednesday, Reggaeton artist Nicky Jam withdrew his support for former President Donald Trump, after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s remarks about Puerto Rico during the Trump rally on Sunday at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The performer known for “Hasta el amanecer,” whose authentic name is Nick Rivera Caminero, made an appearance on stage alongside Trump during a September campaign rally in Las Vegas. In this event, the political candidate mistakenly identified Jam as a female.
“Latin music superstar Nicky Jam. Do you know Nicky? She’s hot,” said Trump.
Originally, individuals like me wouldn’t have the opportunity to meet the president. Yet, here I am, fortunate enough to do so. And guess what? We need you! We truly miss having you as our leader, don’t we?” said Jam, adorning a red “Make America Great Again” cap.
On Instagram, Jam shared a video on Wednesday. In it, he expressed his initial backing of Trump due to the belief he’d improve the economy. However, Jam also stated that Hinchcliffe going so far as to call Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” had gone too far.
As a film critic, let me rephrase that statement: “I’ve never imagined a comedian would disparage my homeland. This has led me to withdraw my backing of Donald Trump and abstain from political discussions. Puerto Rico deserves recognition and respect.” Jam expressed this sentiment to his 43.5 million followers.
Hinchcliffe’s comments sparked outcry in Puerto Rican communities across the country, including in swing states like Pennsylvania and North Carolina. The Trump campaign has since attempted to distance itself from the comedian.
According to campaign advisor Danielle Alvarez, the humor shared doesn’t align with the beliefs or stance of President Trump or his campaign team.
Since then, well-known Puerto Rican artists such as Bad Bunny, Ricky Martin, and Jennifer Lopez have expressed disapproval of Hinchcliffe’s comments on social media platforms, while simultaneously sharing a Harris campaign video criticizing Trump’s 2017 Hurricane Maria response with their massive followers.
On Monday, singer Marc Anthony announced on X that he was endorsing Harris for president.
As a movie reviewer, let me share my poignant recollections: “Following the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Maria on our island, relief funds to the tune of billions were blocked by Trump, while countless lives were lost. In those desperate times when our families yearned for clean water and electricity, Trump tossed paper towels and derided Puerto Rico as ‘dirty’ and ‘poor.’
