As a seasoned music festival goer and reviewer with over two decades of experience, I have seen my fair share of cancellations and last-minute changes. However, the recent turn of events at Saga Festival in Bucharest leaves me feeling disheartened.
Nicki Minaj unexpectedly called off her scheduled Sunday night showcase at the Saga Festival in Bucharest, Romania, due to security worries resulting from forthcoming protests slated for the following day.
Due to worries for the safety of both my team and me, my security advisors have urged me against attending Romania’s festival tonight, according to the Grammy-nominated rapper’s statement released on X, previously known as Twitter, on Sunday.
As a mother, ensuring I get home to my son and my team makes it home to their families is essential for me. Security’s guidance is crucial in achieving this goal. Ignoring their advice goes against my judgment. Appreciate your understanding and support.
At the Saga Festival Instagram account, they shared Minaj’s disappointing news and expressed their own sadness, stating, “We’re all feeling down about this, and we understand it’s a letdown for everyone involved, including us.”
At the music festival, you’ll get a complete refund if your ticket wasn’t scanned, while only a partial refund will be offered if it had been scanned previously.
As a moviegoer, I’d put it this way: During the festival, my disappointment grew when DJ Hardwell, who was scheduled to headline on Friday alongside Rita Ora, suddenly stopped performing. He expressed his frustration towards Saga, claiming they hadn’t paid him and provided subpar equipment. In a video posted online, he shared, “No money paid for me to be here tonight, but I’m still here. Saga, if I’m here for you, I want to put on a show for you. But unfortunately, the entire setup is failing me. I can’t perform, it’s just not possible.”
I replied to Hardwell on Instagram, sharing, “Our gear made its journey here from the Netherlands, just like yours did. We’ve put in countless hours to create this year’s Saga, crafting an experience for our artists and music lovers. If given the chance, we would have swiftly and seamlessly resolved any technical glitches that arose during your set, rather than having it abruptly ended. We’ve gone above and beyond to meet your requests, even agreeing to the agreed payment terms.”
Minaj has experienced cancelled shows before. In May, she was held at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport due to having “soft drugs,” as the Dutch police described it, and was set to perform in Manchester at the time. Despite being fined and freed, she missed the show, blaming the incident on deliberate hindrance.
I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be reuniting with my amazing fans in London this coming Friday during the resume of my Pink Friday 2 World Tour at the Wireless Festival. Can’t wait to put on another unforgettable headlining show for you all!
