Nicki Chapman recalls ‘scary’ moment she found Robbie Williams being injected with stimulants by Prince’s doctor after he passed out – as the singer wows fans at Creamfields
As a reader, delving into Robbie Williams‘ heartfelt words, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of empathy for his struggles. His journey from the heights of fame to the depths of despair is one that many of us might recognize, albeit on a smaller scale. It’s a poignant reminder that success and happiness are not always synonymous, and that behind closed doors, even the most successful among us can be battling demons unseen.
Nicki Chapman reminisced about discovering a passed-out Robbie Williams receiving stimulant injections from Prince’s personal physician, which she described as one of the most terrifying moments she’s ever experienced.
The television host, who is now 57 years old and was previously a music publicist, collaborated with the popular band Take That during their peak success in the ’90s, as well as during Robbie’s personal struggle with addiction.
The performer received an injection of the substance to enable him to perform alongside his fellow musicians on stage shortly afterward, during their concert tour in Germany.
In her recently published book featured in The Times, she penned down a scene where she mentioned, ‘Had he ever used those substances before, specifically with me? To be honest, I’m not certain.’
During those moments, it was one of the most terrifying periods in my experience, as he seemed to be full of endless energy, much like an Everlasting Bunny. Yet, my mind raced with thoughts, oh my God, things could have turned out differently. After all, he was quite young.
Meanwhile, Robbie had been captivating audiences, performing onstage at Creamfields on Sunday, as part of the fresh electronic ensemble, Lufthaus – all while maintaining his clean and sober lifestyle.
He displayed his toned, muscular arms while wearing a white vest, confidently performing and dancing atop the DJ booth.
At the conclusion of their performance, the band surprised fans by transitioning from dance tunes to the iconic ballad “Angels.” As the frontman looked at his bandmates, he declared triumphantly, “Just as I suspected, they recognize me!” (This version maintains the essence of the original while using simpler and more conversational language.)
Previously, Robbie openly confessed that while on tour with Take That, he used to consume an entire bottle of vodka daily prior to rehearsals. Additionally, following a six-day drinking spree, he had injections administered by a physician.
Reflecting on a particularly chaotic weekend, he shared with The Sun last year: “I completely lost control, consuming anything and everything in excessive amounts.”
Before the live performance, I was vomiting violently with a dark liquid that covered the entire bathroom floor.
After receiving an injection from a doctor, I proceeded with my performance. The experience left me feeling quite anxious. Following the performance, I returned to where I was before, acting as if nothing unusual had taken place.
In the Netflix documentary titled “Robbie,” he shared that his life became unmanageable to an extreme degree following his addiction to alcohol.
Apart from reminiscing about their time together, the performer admitted to feeling intensely resentful and envious towards bandmate Gary Barlow. Eventually, this led to them departing from the successful band in 1995.
In the movie, Robbie confessed: ‘I consumed whatever I could lay my hands on – ecstasy, cocaine, alcohol. I would drink almost a whole bottle of vodka each night before rehearsals, and this was a regular occurrence.’
Regarding his struggle with substance abuse, Robbie expressed: ‘He’s spiraling out of control, dependent on both cocaine and alcohol. I can’t seem to break free, I can’t manage to quit.’
It seems unlikely that you’ll experience anything but a post-drinking state (hangover) and then being sober again, as you’re once more setting yourself up for another hangover down the line.
It became clear to everyone around me that I was facing a difficult situation, yet they chose not to intervene. By then, it seemed I had reached an irrevocable point. My life had deteriorated to such an extent that my manager recognized drastic action was necessary. Consequently, he realized I needed immediate assistance and arranged for me to seek treatment in a rehabilitation center.
Previously, I turned to substance abuse as a means to numb my emotions. Once I stopped using these substances, all the feelings and thoughts I had been pushing down for years surfaced. This has led me to feel deeply depressed and struggling with mental health issues.
In his twenties when he was diagnosed with depression, Robbie went on to say: ‘Even though good things were happening to me and I was achieving success, some people still wondered why I might feel sad.’
As an ardent admirer, I found myself thrust onto a stage before a sea of thousands, my heart pounding like a drum. The atmosphere was suffocatingly intense, as if I were teetering on the edge of the hundredth floor, the room ablaze with anticipation. In that moment, it felt as though I was trapped between two unpalatable fates: to remain imprisoned in the inferno or to leap from the precipice into the unknown. It was an uncomfortable predicament, indeed.
Regarding his dispute with bandmate Gary, Robbie admitted that his feelings toward him grew so strong that he acted in a vengeful manner. However, he has since extended an apology for the way he treated him.
He confessed that he harbored a desire to retaliate against Gary, as he was intensely envious of his professional achievements and abilities.
As a lifestyle consultant, let me share my perspective: I found myself harboring resentment towards Gary, who seemed to have it all – the career, the success, and other material possessions that I admired. This sense of envy fueled a desire for retribution within me. To put it simply, I was driven by a strong need for vengeance.
It appeared that one individual was overseeing Take That, and that individual turned out to be Gary Barlow, with the entire operation centered around him.
As a youth, I would have felt envious and resentful towards him. Those encounters left me feeling strange and uneasy, reminiscent of situations in “Lord of the Flies.”
Robbie expressed his regret for the disrespectful manner in which he addressed Gary, specifically referring to him as ‘dead’ and using an offensive term. In simpler terms, he apologized for how he behaved towards Gary.
