Nick Owen’s Heartbreaking Cancer Update: ‘The Worst Day of My Life’

I can hardly contain my excitement and relief, as Nick Owen, a man whose work I admire deeply, shares a heartfelt update about his courageous battle against cancer. He’s beaming with hope, using words that suggest he might just have conquered this dreadful disease. His words transport me back to the darkest day of his life – the day of his diagnosis. A day that for him was the worst imaginable. But today, it seems, is a day filled with optimism and gratitude, as he stands on the precipice of potentially being cancer-free.

In August 2023, the previous host of TV-am, now 77 years old, verified that he had been fighting a serious and aggressive form of prostate cancer since his diagnosis four months earlier in April.

Although the BBC presenter showed no symptoms, a blood test found slightly higher than normal levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Consequently, his general practitioner recommended that he consult a specialist, ultimately resulting in his diagnosis and subsequent surgery.

Now, Nick admitting his diagnosis has led hundreds of men to seek testing, as he openly discusses spreading awareness about the issue.

Reflecting into a mirror, Nick confessed: ‘That day was likely my most difficult one yet. Nevertheless, I’m managing, I’m thankful. I’m doing quite well and content with where life has led me so far. Here’s to hoping I’ve conquered cancer.’

Nick shared that many men have been reaching out to him, expressing gratitude for his openness about his cancer struggle. They’ve mentioned that his public disclosure has inspired them to undergo testing and, in certain instances, led to the early detection of their own cancers.

Each week, I receive heartening messages from individuals who share that my tale inspired them to undergo a PSA test. As a result, they’ve been diagnosed and are now preparing for their surgery.

In his village, there was a man who shared with Nick that he underwent a PSA test due to the publicity, which later led to his diagnosis of prostate cancer even though he had shown no prior symptoms.

Nick commented: ‘It consistently occurs, approximately 200 times in total. It’s awe-inspiring and evokes strong emotions. I’m pleased that something positive has emerged from it. It’s essential for people to undergo testing.’

Earlier, he confessed that he found it hard to disclose his cancer diagnosis to his kids, yet he felt it essential for his immediate family to be well-informed and vigilant about the situation.

Nick made it clear to his four grown-up kids, three sons among them, that he had chosen to inform them about a possible genetically transmitted ailment and the indicators to watch out for, allowing them to stay vigilant.

He shared with Deadly Silent Podcast: “I’ve found myself right smack in the thick of things, and I came to understand that visibility is key – the quicker you are noticed, the better.

As an overly enthusiastic fan, my recent MRI scan showed a subtle indication of some activity brewing. Following this, I underwent a biopsy procedure. The results were alarming, revealing something highly malignant and aggressive. Time is of the essence now; swift action is required to tackle this issue effectively.

Sharing the news with my kids proved challenging. I have a family of four, three sons who are all grown men – two are in their forties while the youngest is in his late thirties. It was an incredibly emotional experience.

He noted that for Andy, Tim, and Chris specifically, it serves as a caution since it could potentially be a genetic condition.

I really want my sons to stay vigilant about their health. I plan on encouraging them to get PSA tests earlier than 50, if possible. The key point is that if they have any concerns or suspicions, they should definitely get it checked out by a professional.

Owen learned about his diagnosis mere weeks following the disclosure by his ex-TV-am colleague, Anne Diamond (aged 68), who is currently fighting breast cancer and has undergone a mastectomy.

In the ’90s, in addition to appearing on TV-am, they also hosted a daily news and current events program titled “Good Morning With Anne and Nick” on the BBC.

In conversation with BBC One’s Midlands Today, he shared his experience of how the condition significantly affected his life: ‘I consulted a specialist, but he seemed less concerned as my test results were not exceptionally high.’

However, he suggested that I should undergo a scan, and the results indicated an unusual situation, prompting him to arrange a biopsy, which was performed.

As a result, that day – specifically April 13th – has left an indelible mark on my memory.

He clearly explained to us that the condition was severe and progressive, and he had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. Swift action was required.

‘And that was probably the worst day of my life, or certainly one of them.’

He commented: ‘That moment was extremely somber… as I drove home afterward, my phone became inundated with calls and messages from various people for hours straight.’

Additionally, that period was incredibly challenging for both me and my devoted spouse, Vicki, who stood by my side throughout it all.
