Nick Jonas and Paul Rudd’s “terrific” Power Ballad debuts with 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating

Okay, so I just heard about this new movie, Power Ballad, starring Nick Jonas and Paul Rudd, and it’s getting AMAZING reviews! Seriously, it has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes right now, and it doesn’t even come out until summer. I’m definitely adding it to my watchlist!

The new musical comedy follows Rick, a wedding singer portrayed by Paul Rudd, and his heartwarming friendship with Danny, a rock star whose popularity is waning, played by Kevin Jonas.

When Danny turns one of Rick’s old songs into a popular hit, reviving his own career, Rick becomes furious and determined to expose the song’s real beginnings.

John Carney directed and co-wrote the film, which features Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu, Jack Reynor, and Sophie Vavasseur in the cast.

The movie was filmed in Dublin in 2024, and it recently premiered at the Dublin International Film Festival this month.

With Power Ballad, Carney keeps his winning streak going, delivering another delightful film. And it’s no surprise – having Paul Rudd leading the cast certainly helps!

Awards Buzz

As with all of John Carney’s films, music is central to the story, but this one also has a playful sense of humor. It’s one of his more lighthearted movies, yet it’s just as reliably entertaining as anything else he’s made.

The Hollywood Reporter

Honestly, playing this felt like hearing your favorite song – it had stuff I recognized, but with enough new twists to keep me hooked, and it was just incredibly satisfying. It really hit the spot!

Variety

I really loved Power Ballad because I totally bought into the story. Paul Rudd is amazing as Rick – he makes you feel like he’s a real, talented musician with that classic dad-rock vibe. He just becomes the character.

Power Ballad will be released in cinemas on 29 May.
