Nick Frost Says He’ll Portray Hagrid Differently but Respectfully in New Series
In an upcoming HBO series based on JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books, Rubeus Hagrid, the custodian of keys and grounds at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, will be portrayed by Nick Frost. He recently shared some details about his method for embodying this character with Collider.
As I eagerly share my excitement for the upcoming live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon,” I find myself reflecting on Frost’s words: “When you’re cast, it’s not about mimicking what came before, but rather, adding something unique. Although I deeply respect and admire Robbie’s [Coltrane] exceptional performance, I will never strive to replicate him.

As a film enthusiast, I often find myself delving deeper into the creative mind of my favorite directors. However, what intrigues me most is the thoughtful aspect that surfaces in their commentaries, a side rarely glimpsed by fans accustomed to their more mainstream works.
Known for portraying the amiable, naive sidekick opposite Simon Pegg in the Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End) and their TV show Spaced, Frost has also had chances to shine independently, as seen in films like Cuban Fury, where he demonstrated a more profound emotional depth by leading the movie.
Though Hagrid-like in his kindness, friendliness, and lack of intellect might be one’s initial impression, Frost envisions a more expansive role for this character. This concept exceeds what could plausibly unfold in a film, but Frost is convinced that it would thrive in the format of a television series.

He mentioned he’d approach something differently, not in a completely new way, recalling Coltrane’s memorable portrayal. To him, it’s crucial to show reverence for the subject matter, yet there’s room for intricate details. He described Hagrid as a lovable, misplaced, violent, amusing, warm child. Being able to tackle a book per season allows him to delve deeper into this aspect, and he’s eagerly anticipating it. He wants it to be funny, mischievous, scared, protective, and naive. That’s his intention.
During the interview, I learned that he touched upon the anticipated filming timeline, but didn’t offer any specific starting date. However, when discussing our work schedule, he mentioned we’d be engaged for “about ten to eleven months per season.
His work has already started during the pre-production phase, and he appears incredibly eager to move forward.

He shared with Collider, “I’ve been working on creating character heads and positioning hands and other elements.” He continued, “They showed me something, and I was astounded. It was incredible! I’ve always adored films, and cinema has been a significant part of my life. So, to be involved now and to see a dancing mushroom, it’s simply amazing!
Despite Hagrid playing a crucial role in all the “Harry Potter” films, the need for succinct storytelling often resulted in fans missing out on significant character-defining moments and plot points from the books. For example, the books depicted Hagrid’s incredible power in battle when he singlehandedly fought off a group of wizards, as well as his growth as a teacher – a transformation that was only hinted at in the movies.

In an extended sequence, viewers might also witness snapshots of his past interactions with a race of giants prior to the wizard conflict – these scenes could be what Frost refers to as “room for finer details.
For those concerned about the upcoming series, let’s draw comfort from Hagrid’s words, “There’s no point in fretting about it. Whatever happens will happen, and we’ll face it when it does.
