Nick Cannon left stunned after shock mental health diagnosis after fathering 12 children: 'I need help'

As someone who has spent years navigating the complexities of Hollywood and its relentless spotlight, I can deeply empathize with Nick Cannon as he shares his journey with mental health and specifically, narcissistic personality disorder. His courage to openly discuss this diagnosis is truly commendable and serves as a powerful reminder that even those who seem to have it all together may struggle silently.

Nick Cannon is breaking his silence about a new mental health diagnosis he’s learning to live with.

In the first week of this month, a 44-year-old man who is a father to twelve children disclosed on his Counsel Culture podcast that he was diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Individuals diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder often exhibit an exaggerated sense of self-worth and a strong desire for recognition from others, as described by the Mayo Clinic. These individuals might struggle with empathizing with the emotions of those around them.

While it’s generally understood that narcissistic personality disorder, similar to other personality disorders, may persist throughout one’s life, its symptoms can significantly lessen through intensive treatment strategies.

On Wednesday, while dishing out Thanksgiving meals at the Los Angeles Mission, Cannon expressed to People that he had long harbored suspicions about potential unidentified mental health issues.

He shared that although there are parts he still doesn’t fully grasp, he’s long desired to be evaluated for this. After undergoing numerous assessments, he received his diagnosis: ADHD. As a child, he struggled with dyslexia, yet knowing now that he is neurodivergent, it feels like an affirmation of something he had always sensed.

In simple terms, the host of Wild ‘N Out mentioned that his recently discovered health issue presents him with a fresh chance to enhance himself and his lifestyle.

He shared, “There are numerous categories people use, but what I mean is, I openly accept it and declare, ‘See, I’m working on myself, I require assistance, guide me.’ In essence, I wholeheartedly endorse mental wellness and therapy.

‘It’s good to serve as an inspiration for others, but also finding personal growth through the healing process is equally important.’

Cannon previously had Dr. Cheyenne Bryant, a psychologist, on his podcast to diagnose him.

In their conversation, he acknowledged that many characteristics typically associated with Narcissistic Personality Disorder seemed to fit him quite well.

However, his exploration led him to grasp the nature of the disorder, which in turn gave him a sense of strength and control.

It isn’t yet clear what specifically leads to Narcissistic Personality Disorder, but it is believed that experiences from early childhood may contribute to its development.

It’s believed that strained relationships with parents may contribute, although various behaviors can influence the emergence of such a condition.

According to Harvard Medical School, children may face risks if they’re consistently overlooked or harshly criticized by their parents. On the other hand, children might also develop a disorder if they are excessively praised by caregivers.
