Niantic games, makers of Pokémon GO, purchased by Scopely
Pokémon GO has a new home moving forward, with Niantic games being acquired by Scopely.
Following numerous rumors, the acquisition of Niantic’s complete game portfolio by Scopely – which is backed by Saudi Arabia – has been formally announced. This deal encompasses Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Wayfarer, Campfire, and Monster Hunter NOW.
Earlier this year, news broke about a potential $3.5 billion deal that stirred mixed feelings among fans of various Niantic games. To clarify matters and allay concerns, Scopely has recently made a series of detailed statements aimed at offering transparency to the gaming community as they move forward.
This encompasses addressing questions related to Pokémon GO Live Events, the Community Ambassador program, and other related topics.
Pokémon GO officially purchased by Scopely
A recent blog post on Pokémon GO, penned by Ed Wu, head of the Pokémon GO team, offered insights and updates intended to comfort long-time Pokémon GO enthusiasts regarding the game’s future development.
One significant and comforting aspect of these updates is that the entire Pokémon GO team remains united following this acquisition. This implies that the same individuals will continue to develop the game, adhering to the same plan they had been working on previously.
It was further emphasized that Pokémon GO Fest and similar live events would persist, as Ed expressed eagerness for continued involvement for many years. Additionally, Scopely is granting the development team more independence to pursue their own ideas in the future.
Additionally, we’re planning to keep pouring resources into enhancing our Pokémon GO Community Ambassador program. These improvements are being made with the upcoming Pokémon GO Fest in mind, taking place this summer.
Will this change Pokémon GO?
While there are a lot of reassurances about the games future, things will change as Wu notes.
As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that while Pokémon GO may continue to grow and transform, the spirit of its creation and development will always stay the same. We’re committed to making sure this journey becomes even more enriching for each one of you.

To put it simply, this acquisition for Niantic games seems like an effortless transition, much like moving files from one place to another. Since the same team remains in control, the game is unlikely to undergo a drastic change overnight. The extensive details revealed today indicate that Scopely has taken into account the apprehensions voiced by Pokémon GO fans when news of the acquisition first surfaced a few weeks back.
They say that:
For a long time, we’ve held Niantic games team’s groundbreaking gameplay in high esteem, as well as the lively communities that have molded their titles into cherished experiences. We deeply appreciate what sets these games apart – the opportunity to discover new places, the bonds formed during the journey, and the excitement of uncovering hidden treasures.
This collaboration with the Niantic games team, who are set to become part of Scopely following this acquisition, will undoubtedly empower them to realize their ambitious, player-centric long-term objectives.
Scopely in their message to Niantic games communities
It could take a while to determine if there will be significant changes in the game. Players have voiced recent concerns about the scarcity of new Pokémon debuts in the wild, the abundance of tickets and recurring crashes. If these issues are resolved, the future of Pokémon GO is likely to shine as brightly as before.
