Niall Horan revealed that a new song is dedicated to his late bandmate, Liam Payne. He also shared that he needed to withdraw from public life to mourn Payne’s unexpected passing.

Liam passed away unexpectedly in October 2024 at the young age of 31, after a fall from a hotel balcony while in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He did this big interview with GQ – it’s part of their Hype thing – and he really opened up about how it all affected him. I’ve been waiting so long to hear him talk about it, and honestly, I’m already bracing myself because I know it’s going to be heartbreaking but so important.

Niall, age 32, has released a new solo album titled Dinner Party. One of the songs on the album, called ‘End of an Era,’ is about Liam.

In this heartfelt song, Niall reflects on the One Direction years, singing about cherished memories and how quickly time has flown by. He expresses that saying goodbye was incredibly difficult.

He shared that he withdrew from public life for a while after Liam’s funeral, which was also attended by his former bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson.

It’s been incredibly moving to see so many memories shared lately. Looking through old photos and videos of us together really brought everything flooding back – instant nostalgia, but also a wave of sadness and the other tough emotions that naturally come with loss. It’s a reminder of all the good times, even as we grieve.

When I heard the news, I honestly couldn’t believe it. I remember getting the message and just… staring at it, thinking ‘What?!’ It just didn’t seem possible, like it couldn’t be real. It still doesn’t, honestly.

It’s shocking to hear about someone so young passing away, particularly when you’ve recently seen them. I’m still processing it – I’ve gone from being stunned, to deeply saddened, and now I’m feeling angry.

He fondly remembered sharing a room with Liam during the X Factor bootcamp as one of his strongest memories of him.

Niall mentioned seeing Liam in Argentina just before he passed away, and said he appeared to be doing well at the time.

He explained that despite the time apart, they quickly reconnected and felt like old friends when they saw each other again.

Following the death of Liam, Harry shared that he’s been reflecting on his own life. He discussed this while also promoting his latest album.

I recently spoke with the singer, and it was the first time he opened up about the loss of Liam. He shared how incredibly difficult it was, not just dealing with the grief itself, but also feeling like he had to grieve in a certain way – a way that others expected of him. It’s a really important reminder that everyone processes loss differently, and there’s no ‘right’ way to feel.

Harry recently appeared on Apple Music’s The Zane Lowe Show to discuss his new album, ‘Kiss All the Time,’ and shared that he continues to find it difficult to talk about the loss of Liam.

He said: ‘Even the idea of talking about it, I struggle with that a little bit even. 

It was really difficult when my friend died, especially realizing how others shared in my grief. It felt strange to have people experience a part of something so personal, and I felt a lot of intense emotions.

It’s like suddenly realizing others might want you to express your feelings, or that you’re not truly connecting with what you’re experiencing if you don’t.

Losing a friend is always hard, but it’s especially painful when that friend felt like a part of yourself – someone you deeply connected with and shared so much in common.

Harry said he saw Liam as someone who had the ‘kindest heart who just wanted to be great’. 

He went on to explain that it was a pivotal moment, forcing him to reflect on his life and consider what he truly wanted to achieve.

I often ask myself, “How do I want to live?” I believe the best way to remember and honor friends we’ve lost is to live a full and meaningful life. It’s especially important when someone truly special passes away – it’s a deeply sad experience.

Harry rose to fame as a member of a hugely popular boyband with Zayn, Louis, Niall, and Liam.

In 2016, the group decided to take a break with no set return date, and each member began pursuing individual projects.

After One Direction broke up, Harry Styles quickly signed a major record deal with Columbia Records in 2016 – the same label that had previously worked with One Direction.

He enjoyed a hugely successful career, winning numerous Grammy and Brit Awards and amassing a fortune of £175 million.

Liam’s first single was a hit, but he found it harder to keep up the same level of success as the rest of his band.

Liam Payne first rose to fame with the group One Direction, signed to Sony Music. After the band went on hiatus, he began his solo career at age 22 and signed a record deal with Capitol Records, which is part of Universal Music, in July 2016.
