NFL Network host apologizes after criticizing Tom Brady’s broadcasting debut: ‘I am rooting you on’
As a lifelong football fan who has seen countless games and players come and go, I must say that Tom Brady’s debut as a color commentator for Fox was a mixed bag. On one hand, his knowledge of the game was impressive, and he provided insightful analysis that only someone with his level of experience could offer. However, I felt that his delivery seemed somewhat robotic and lacked the passion that we’ve come to expect from him on the field.
Tom Brady seemed a bit nervous.
As a devoted fan, I must admit, the legendary football player who clinched seven Super Bowl titles, bagged three Most Valuable Player awards, and shattered countless quarterbacking records throughout his 23-year NFL journey – not forgetting to mention, he took all those raunchy jabs during a Netflix roast with grace – didn’t quite dazzle in his premiere performance as a color commentator for Fox during the regular season.
During the Dallas Cowboys versus Cleveland Browns game on Sunday, Brady showcased the extensive football understanding typically associated with the athlete often referred to as the greatest of all time (GOAT), while working alongside play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt.
However, just one game into his 10-year, $375 million deal with Fox, Brady is facing criticism for a delivery that appeared somewhat mechanical and displaying an emotional tone reminiscent of the stoic demeanor exhibited by former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick during post-game press conferences.
Towards the end of the first half, Dallas’s kicker Brandon Aubrey found himself ready to attempt a 71-yard field goal. Earlier, a delay-of-game penalty had nullified his record-tying 66-yard effort. As Burkhardt expressed astonishment at the audacity of such a long-range attempt, Brady noted that the Cowboys should be prepared if the kick fell short. After the Browns called timeout, he added, “Perhaps everyone will have second thoughts about this one.
The footage was aired on NFL Network‘s “NFL RedZone,” where host Scott Hanson noted Tom Brady’s seemingly subdued emotions.
“Oh, come on,” Hanson said. “Brady’s gotta get more excited than that in the booth.”
On Monday morning, Hanson reposted a clip of his comment, along with an apology to Brady.
Hanson admitted that his comment was thoughtless and inconsiderate. He jokingly made the remark without considering its potential impact. To @TomBrady, he offers an apology for any offense caused and expresses his support for your new endeavor.
As a movie buff putting it all together, I’d say Brady got it right – Dallas indeed revised their game plan. Instead of going for a field goal at the buzzer, they opted for a Hail Mary pass by Dak Prescott into the end zone, but unfortunately, it didn’t connect.
Another awkward moment occurred on camera, when Brady’s attempt at a fist bump with Mike Pereira wasn’t noticed for several seconds by the rules analyst. “Oh, don’t leave me hanging,” joked Brady, who was eventually bumped back by Pereira.
To be fair, Brady didn’t have a lot to work with during his regular-season debut as an NFL announcer. The game itself was a dud, with the Cowboys winning in blowout fashion.
On occasion, it’s worth noting that Brady once seemed to allude to Belichick when he mentioned, “I was coached by someone who had no qualms about swearing at his players,” and proceeded to defend this behavior as not necessarily negative.
If you aspire to become an exceptional player, you’ll need to be motivated by tough situations, you’ll benefit from being faced with challenges, and you should also expect constructive criticism, according to Brady.
He stated: “I greatly benefited from the tough training. … Discipline and responsibility are essential in any thriving organization, and I have no issue with coaches who feel compelled to share the truth with their players, because as an NFL player, you don’t often receive a lot of honesty.
