The creators are releasing a fresh adaptation that will revisit familiar scenes and delve deeper into previously unexplored parts of the narrative. Project Hail Mary to get a manga adaptation

Hayakawa Publishing is creating a manga version of Project Hail Mary. Hajime Go is handling the artwork, and Kazuko Onoda is adapting the story.

This story is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel, which Onoda had previously translated into Japanese. A preview image shows Ryland Grace meeting Rocky for the first time in the tunnel connecting their spacecraft.

The manga version of the story includes details that were cut or left out of the movie. The original novel goes into much more depth about how Earth dealt with the astrophage threat – including drastic steps to combat global cooling – and provides a fuller picture of Rocky’s background and Grace’s life before the mission. The movie had to shorten these parts to fit within its running time.

The first cut of the movie, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, was over four hours long and needed to be trimmed down. A manga version, released in multiple volumes, wouldn’t have the same length restrictions. It could include extra scenes, like astronauts working outside the Hail Mary spaceship, and show more about how the astrophage affected Earth.

The manga could further develop the story of the Beetles – the self-operating probes named after the famous musicians John, Paul, George, and Ringo. The movie only touched on what they do, but the original manga explains much more about how they send information back to Earth and help ships navigate.

Hayakawa Publishing plans to release the manga in Japan in 2026, but the exact release date is still to be determined. Author Andy Weir has reviewed early versions and found them to be diverse and captivating.
