Nexstar TV stations will not run ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ after return to ABC

Nexstar Media Group, a major television company, announced it won’t be broadcasting “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” when the show returns to television Tuesday night with ABC host Jimmy Kimmel.

Disney brought back its late-night talk show host after comments about the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk caused a major political controversy. The show had been temporarily suspended following the host’s remarks.

Similar to Sinclair Broadcast Group, Nexstar is also refusing to air Jimmy Kimmel’s show in several cities across the US.

Nexstar announced they decided to stop airing ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ last week because ABC described comments made by Mr. Kimmel as inappropriate and poorly timed, especially given important national conversations happening right now. Nexstar says they’re sticking with that decision until they’re confident everyone involved will promote respectful and productive conversations in their communities.

These two TV station groups reach roughly a quarter of all households with televisions, which means advertisers may not be able to reach as many viewers when they buy advertising time on those channels.

This decision comes after discussions between the parties involved, aimed at resolving the conflict that started when Kimmel made comments following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Nexstar is waiting for the Federal Communications Commission to approve its $6.2 billion purchase of Tegna, a major television station owner. Last week, the FCC’s chairman, Brendan Carr, asked ABC to address a related issue.

Nexstar was the first station group to pull Kimmel, prompting Disney to put the show on hiatus.

This is a developing story.
