As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling and the impact it has on people’s lives, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Lindsay Yeo, a New Zealand radio icon who graced our airwaves for over four decades. His unique blend of humor, charisma, and infectious energy transformed the morning commute into a daily dose of joy for countless Kiwis.

Veteran New Zealand radio star Lindsay Yeo died on Tuesday aged 78, following a long illness.

For a quarter of a century, from 1972 to 1997, the well-known broadcaster presented Wellington’s highest-ranked morning program on commercial radio station 2ZB, which was a long-standing staple of the airwaves.

His upbeat demeanour and hilarious banter became a firm fixture of NZ radio.

He often led the ratings significantly, even interacting with over half of his audience at one time.

1946 saw the birth of Lindsay on New Zealand’s South Island, and it wasn’t until 1964 that he embarked on his radio journey, initially as a copywriter. However, he soon discovered his true calling was not behind the scenes but in front of the microphone, presenting instead.

In 1973, I breathed life into the cherished children’s figure, Buzz O’Bumble – the human-sized bee with a knack for mischief, whose witty stunts graced our advertisements. What a thrill it was to bring him to the world!

The character gained massive popularity among the station’s younger audience, often inspiring fans to don Buzz costumes at kids’ gatherings.

In 2022, Wellington Museum commemorated the iconic character with a permanent exhibit.

Due to Buzz’s immense popularity throughout the country, soft toys and music albums showcasing the character were launched for public enjoyment.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d say, “In my lineage, a fair share of us have ventured into the world of entertainment. Among them is my nephew, Lindsay, who has become a household name in New Zealand as a talented singer and actress.

For a quarter of a century he engaged listeners with his hilarious and engaging talk shows.

As a renowned lifestyle expert, I’ve had the pleasure of hosting shows not only here but also on Classic Hits FM and TVNZ’s Top Dance. Additionally, I’ve had the opportunity to travel across the land, bringing my live shows to various towns and cities.

However, in 1997 Lindsay was informed 2ZB was switching to a more hard news format.

The radio legend opted to enjoy an early retirement at age 51.

Lindsay is survived by his wife Jan and their four children.
