New ‘weird and unique’ Northern sitcom branded ‘fun way to spend a few hours’ is on TV tonight

A “funny and pointed” Northern comedy series is set to kick off tonight on Channel 4.

In a new film titled “Pushers“, comedienne Rosie Jones portrays Emily, a character who turns to drug dealing after losing her benefits. Given her condition with cerebral palsy, it’s unlikely that anyone would suspect her of peddling cocaine.

The plot is about a woman named Emily (played by Rosie Jones), who finds herself in dire straits after losing her job and facing cuts to her state benefits. With not much left to lose, she decides to establish an underground drug empire. However, Emily isn’t your typical street-level drug dealer; she’s intelligent, witty, and fiercely sarcastic. What sets her apart even further is that she lives with cerebral palsy.

Throughout her life, Emily has often been underestimated. Instead of acknowledging her accomplishments, people either trivialise her achievements in simple tasks or ignore her altogether. It’s almost as if there’s an ideal cover for criminal activity – being completely disregarded by a flawed system that is supposed to uphold justice.

Initially scripted as a 2022 pilot named “Disability Benefits,” the show, penned by Jones and Peter Fellows, was later reworked into a six-episode series.

At 10 PM tonight, “Pushers” will be aired on Channel 4. For those who prefer to watch the entire series at once, you can stream the complete series as a box set.

In addition to the main actors, we have Ryan McParland, Jon Furlong, Lynn Hunter, Rhiannon Clements, Ruben Reuter, Libby Mai, Trevor Dwyer-Lynch, and Clive Russell joining the production.

On Instagram, Taskmaster star Jones shared some backstage photos from the quirky, distinctive, and decidedly northern series titled Pushers. She expressed her sense of pride over this unusual production.

She expressed astonishment as she announced that the premiere of her sitcom, “Pushers“, would be aired tonight at 10pm on Channel 4.

Here we’ve arrived after a seven-year voyage! I can hardly express my gratitude to everyone who played a role in bringing us to this moment. The path hasn’t always been smooth, but every late night, early dawn, and wash to clear my hair of flour has been worth it.

I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish any of it without my fellow writer, director, and criminal partner-in-crime, Peter Fellows. I’ve never collaborated with anyone as considerate, hilarious, gifted, and humble as him. Thank you for navigating the journey so exceptionally well.

I’m incredibly proud of this unusual, one-of-a-kind, exceptionally northern production. I sincerely hope you all appreciate it as much as we did making it. Warmest regards, Emily The Dealer x.

The production has garnered favorable feedback from critics, with The Standard describing it as an enjoyable use of time, and The Guardian stating that it is both humorous and insightful.
