New Video Game, “Blue Prince”, Just Might Be the Strangest (and Best) Game of the Year Contender in Years

It’s not often we see a fresh kind of video game emerge, and the same goes for any medium. However, I believe Blue Prince has earned its spot as a trailblazer in gaming history. Essentially, it combines elements of deck building, similar to games like Myst, with puzzle-based escape rooms… but in essence, it could pave the way for many more games trying to replicate this unique gaming experience. And maybe that’s how new genres are born?

In the game “Blue Prince,” players assume the role of a family member visiting an inherited estate, uncovering secrets to solve a mystery, a plotline common in many games. However, Tonda Ros’ masterpiece subverts this trope multiple times, perhaps forty-six times! As you delve into the estate, it functions like a deck builder where each door you open presents three possibilities for the next room. Each room is brimming with clues, some hidden and not immediately obvious. Every room offers distinct utilities and interacts with others in unique ways. Imagine it as “Hearthstone,” but instead of cards, you’re constructing a house!

Indeed, I wasn’t expecting to award our top rating so soon in the life of this site, yet here it is. Blue Prince stands as a game for the ages, an essential pick if you have even a passing interest in the puzzle genre.

The fundamental idea behind this setup that makes it so effective? A player can only visit a limited number of locations within a day before they grow weary. Similar to Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, upon waking, they find themselves back at the start… with almost everything restored. The ultimate goal is to reach the enigmatic room hidden deep within the mansion, but the way this puzzle is designed, filled with intricate planning by a single developer, leaves one amazed at how imaginative and intelligent the adventure truly is!

Blue Prince isn’t your ordinary first-person battle royale game. Unlike many games featuring a cheerful mascot in a 2D platform, this one stands out as something entirely unique. To put it simply, it’s unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before. The novelty and uniqueness of its concept are reminiscent of discovering Tetris for the first time and wondering why such an ingenious game hadn’t been invented earlier.

I’m really into Blue Prince. It grabs you instantly…the music, the story, the whole vibe.

Such a cool experience.

To put it simply, this game isn’t designed for everyone. It caters more to those who enjoy a mental challenge. If your idea of fun is constant action and Michael Bay-style explosions, you might find it dull. But if you appreciate the intrigue of escape rooms or reminisce about LucasArts puzzle games from the past, this could be one of the most delightful experiences you’ve had in a while… or even a long time!

If you’re growing weary of empty promises and lack of detail, understand that the game you’re about to embark on is overflowing with fresh, spoiler-worthy excitement. To preserve the thrill for you, I’m keeping secrets. At the moment of this writing, Blue Prince can be played for free on PlayStation and Xbox platforms, while it retails for approximately $30USD on Steam. I wholeheartedly endorse it, considering its potential as a strong contender for Game of the Year. It’s just that remarkable.

So grab your keys, gems and keys. I’ll see you in a red room real soon.
