With the huge success of The Office, it’s no surprise many networks have tried to create similar shows since it ended in 2013. It’s also easy to forget that The Office wasn’t original – the first version actually aired in the UK four years earlier, starring Ricky Gervais.
Steve Carell stepped into the role in 2005, and his version of The Office quickly became known as one of the greatest sitcoms ever made. Now, the show’s fictional company, Dunder Mifflin, is expanding. The Paper is a new series directly connected to the original US show, alongside an Australian remake set to air in 2025, and talk of an American reunion has been ongoing for over a decade.
Fans of The Office have another remake to look forward to! A South African version, titled Die Kantoor, will debut on Showmax on January 20, 2026 (according to Variety). Like the original, it’s filmed in a mockumentary style and is set at a workplace – in this case, a processed meat company called Deluxe Processed Meats, which makes polony. Writer and director Bennie Fourie jokingly describes polony as something no one would ever claim to be enthusiastic about.
The South African version of The Office, called Die Kantoor, will feature Albert Pretorius as Flip, a character similar to David Brent and Michael Scott. Like those characters, Flip has an inflated ego and believes the documentary film crew will record his journey to success after he’s made manager.
This new show definitely seems to have all the key elements of The Office: a fake documentary style, an awkward boss, and a pretty dull workplace. While it’s moved from paper to meatpacking, that’s a good thing – the American Office succeeded by tailoring the show for US audiences instead of copying the British version exactly. It looks like Die Kantoor is doing the same thing, adapting the show for viewers in South Africa.
We’ve noticed that shows inspired by The Office have had mixed results. For example, The Paper has been well-received and will return for a second season, but the Australian version of The Office was cancelled after just one season.
Other international versions of The Office have had varying degrees of success. The French version, Le Bureau, only lasted six episodes, while the German Stromberg ran for five seasons and received good feedback. While none have had quite the same lasting impact as the original American The Office starring Michael Scott, the Dutch version, Die Kantoor, might be an exception – it could connect with its audience as strongly as the US show did with American viewers from 2005 to 2013.
