New Star Wars Movie Trilogy Reportedly Already Filming, Set After Episode 9

A recent report suggests that a new Star Wars trilogy, taking place after Episode IX, might already be in production. It’s been almost six years since the last trilogy concluded with The Rise of Skywalker (released in 2019), and Lucasfilm hasn’t officially announced plans for a new set of three films. While several standalone movies, such as The Mandalorian & Grogu and James Mangold’s planned movie about the first Jedi, are in development, many fans are hoping for a new trilogy – a new group of three films – to continue the saga, given the franchise’s history of being presented in trilogies.

According to a new report from Insider, Lucasfilm is considering the forthcoming Star Wars: Starfighter as the beginning of a fresh trilogy within the popular science fiction franchise. The report, shared by My Time To Shine Hello, suggests this could launch a new storyline in the Star Wars universe.

A well-known insider revealed on their X (formerly Twitter) page that the upcoming Star Wars film will feature a near the end. This is intended to pave the way for a possible follow-up film and ultimately lead to a trilogy of movies starring Ryan Gosling, all centered around the Starfighter storyline.

It’s currently unclear who this cameo appearance might be for, but there’s been talk that Daisy Ridley, who played Rey, could be involved in the 2027 movie. This might be a discreet nod to the Jedi from the Sequel Trilogy.

Both Starfighter and the new movie about the New Jedi Order, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, are set a few years after Episode IX. Therefore, it would logically fit the timeline if Rey appeared in one of them.

Ever since The Rise of Skywalker came out, people have been constantly discussing a new Star Wars trilogy. There were reports that a new series of three movies would begin with The Mandalorian & Grogu, and Simon Kinberg, who worked on the X-Men films, was also considered to develop a potential trilogy.

Star Wars: Starfighter is being filmed now in England and Italy. The upcoming movie, from the director of Deadpool & Wolverine, features Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray. The story centers around a skilled pilot whose mission is to transport a unique teenager safely to a specific location.

Ryan Gosling and Chris Pratt’s adventure won’t be easy, however, because Mia Goth, known for Pearl, and Matt Smith, who previously played Doctor Who, will be playing the main villains in the film. Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 28, 2027.

Why Star Wars: Starfighter Makes Sense For a Trilogy?

Star Wars: Starfighter kicking off the next Star Wars trilogy just makes sense.

Although The Mandalorian & Grogu marks Star Wars’ big comeback to cinemas (and has the potential to be hugely popular), Starfighter represents a different approach to Star Wars films – it features well-known, highly successful actors taking the lead.

Ryan Gosling is undoubtedly the most famous actor to ever star in a new Star Wars film, and he’s taking on the role at the peak of his career. Usually, the franchise chooses actors who aren’t as well-known to lead their major movies, but that’s not happening this time. It’s a significant shift in strategy.

In the entertainment industry, where studios often prioritize safe investments, casting Ryan Gosling to headline the next Star Wars trilogy seems like a very reliable bet for box office success. It’s as close to a guaranteed hit as you’ll likely find-unless, perhaps, Christopher Nolan himself were to direct a Star Wars film.

Lucasfilm has many possibilities for the future of this famous movie universe, and featuring Gosling as its leading face seems like a guaranteed financial success.

Of course, a major celebrity, Pedro Pascal, is set to star in The Mandalorian movie. However, this still feels like a gamble, as Disney hasn’t yet managed to successfully bring any of its streaming series to theaters.

Although there’s no certainty, choosing Ryan Gosling to lead this new part of the Star Wars saga – and focusing on the Starfighter legacy – seems like a smart move.
