New Star Wars book trilogy showcases the politics behind the Rebellion vs the Empire

As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard about the upcoming “Star Wars: Reign of the Empire” trilogy! This new series promises to delve into the political landscape of the Rebellion during Emperor Palpatine’s reign, focusing on beloved characters like Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, and Saw Gerrera. I was blown away by the announcement, especially since we had already been treated to a wealth of news from San Diego Comic-Con 2024.

After an exhilarating San Diego Comic-Con 2024 filled with exciting updates from the world of books and comics (check it out here), Star Wars publishing unveiled a thrilling surprise for devoted fans like me! io9 was the first to break the news: a new trilogy delving into the political intrigue behind the Rebellion spanning over twenty years is in development. The initial volume, titled “The Mask of Fear,” is set to hit shelves in February 2025.

Reign of the Empire” series is a trio of novels delving into the political shifts during Emperor Palpatine’s rule, featuring characters such as Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, Saw Gerrera, and fresh creations. The first novel, titled “The Mask of Fear“, will be authored by Alexander Freed. Del Ray’s Senior Editor, Tom Hoeler, disclosed on Twitter that Rebecca Roanhorse would write the second book, while Fran Wilde will pen the third.

In a subsequent tweet series, Hoeler elaborated on the trilogy, revealing that the name of the first book is inspired by the character Nemik from “Andor.”

‘Oppression is the Mask of Fear’ – Nemik. This is not a direct Andor tie-in (not a Nemik book) but that perfectly captures the tone.

The objective behind this trilogy has always been to convey stories that share the same depth and authenticity in terms of setting and characters, much like “Andor” does. We aim to preserve this essence while being mindful of the challenge it presents. Each book will tackle a different segment of the nearly 20-year time frame, beginning with Book 1 set during “Empire Year One.” The series will then progress forward, allowing each installment to be a self-contained and complete narrative.

Before the publication of “The Mask of Fear,” Hoeler concluded his Twitter discussion with some recommended readings.
