New Star Wars book reframes Mace Windu's duel with Palpatine

As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast who’s spent countless hours dissecting every detail of the galaxy far, far away, I must say that the new book, “Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss,” has certainly added a fresh perspective to one of my favorite characters. Mace Windu, a Jedi Master whose power and wisdom have always left me in awe, is even more intriguing now that we know about his unique lightsaber form, Vaapad.

Since his debut in Star Wars, Mace Windu has been recognized as one of the most powerful Jedi within the Galactic Republic. A novel published by Random House Worlds could shed light on where this Jedi Master derived such immense power, and potentially why it contrasted with accessing the dark side.

In “Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss” by author Steven Barnes, due for release this week, readers will delve deeper into the distinctive lightsaber technique known as Vaapad. Vaapad is an adaptation of another lightsaber form that promotes Jedi to channel their darker feelings to fuel their combat methodology.

Vaapad, in particular, enabled Mace to harness his negative feelings, preventing these emotions from consuming him entirely. This perspective significantly alters our understanding of the battle between Windu and Palpatine in “Revenge of the Sith.” While Palpatine was deeply engrossed in the dark side during their fight, Mace Windu might have channeled his fear and rage to meet, if not surpass, the power Palpatine manifested. Remarkably, he accomplished this feat without succumbing to chaos.

In another way of putting it, Anakin Skywalker might have benefited greatly from Mace Windu’s teachings. A scene in the book depicts a brief training session between them, where Mace acknowledges Anakin’s strong-willed nature and talent. However, Anakin failed to grasp the Sith-defeating technique of channeling his negative feelings, which ultimately led to Mace Windu’s downfall.

From a passionate fan perspective: It wasn’t that Mace Windu lacked the power; instead, it was Anakin Skywalker who had strayed too far down a dark path, losing his way to make the right decision. The next time you revisit this scene, consider focusing on Mace – if he could have intervened, perhaps he could have preserved the galaxy forever.

Star Wars Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss is available now wherever you get your Star Wars books.
