Without the recent data breach at Insomniac Games, a third Marvel’s Spider-Man game would likely feel much closer to release. However, with Marvel’s Wolverine in development and rumors about a Venom game, it’s unclear when we’ll finally get Spider-Man 3. Fortunately, a recent post from someone claiming to be Peter Parker suggests we might not have to wait as long as we thought.
Ben Jordan, the actor who portrays Peter Parker’s face, recently shared a post on Instagram with a spider emoji and the caption “IYKYK,” strongly suggesting that work on a Spider-Man game—likely developed by Insomniac—is starting or already happening. It’s unclear if this means development of Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 has begun, or if Spider-Man will appear in a different game altogether.
Insomniac’s Spider-Man Is Back, But Where Will He Appear Next?
With Marvel’s Wolverine confirmed and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 likely on the way, it’s hard to say what Insomniac Games will work on next. For instance, whether they make a game featuring the X-Men team might depend on how well Marvel’s Wolverine sells. Also, releasing a continuation of the Venom story more than three years after Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would be unusual, unless it’s meant to keep fans entertained while they wait for the next full Spider-Man game.
Insomniac Games has a lot to think about regarding future projects and timelines after Marvel’s Wolverine, especially since they’re currently hiring. While Ben Jordan hinted at what might come next, their options seem limited, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 isn’t the only game they could be working on.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 Is The Likeliest Option
While not yet officially confirmed, a third Marvel’s Spider-Man game is highly likely. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 left several storylines unfinished, and a recent hint from Ben Jordan suggests Insomniac Games is starting to work on the sequel.
With the release of Marvel’s Wolverine just five months away, and Insomniac Games promising more details this spring, it’s likely that work has already begun on Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. This would include bringing in actors and recording performance capture data.
The ending of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 makes it surprising to see Peter Parker set to have a major part in the next game. While he seemed content stepping back to focus on the Emily-May Foundation and letting Miles Morales be New York’s only Spider-Man, Peter has become too central to the story to simply leave it.
Most fans expect to see Green Goblin in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, and it wouldn’t make sense for Peter Parker to disappear from the story before that happens. While Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 seems like the most probable reason Ben Jordan was asked to recreate his Peter Parker appearance, there’s still a chance he could be involved in other projects too.
A Cameo In Wolverine Or Venom Is On The Table
Now that Marvel’s Wolverine is confirmed to take place in the same universe as Marvel’s Spider-Man, it’s possible we could see Spider-Man appear in the Wolverine game. This would be especially exciting if Spider-Man’s appearance came as part of a story-driven expansion released after the game launches.
Insomniac Games has cleverly filled its Marvel’s Spider-Man games with Easter eggs and references to the wider Marvel Universe, even including a personal message from Wong to Miles Morales. A complete Spider-Man appearance in the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine would really show how interconnected these games are.
Okay, so Ben Jordan hinted at Spider-Man possibly showing up in the new Wolverine game, and it’s got me thinking. If that’s true, they must have captured a model of Peter Parker’s face – meaning we might actually see him without his mask! It probably won’t be a huge role, maybe just a quick appearance like he had in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, or even just a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo. But it’s wild to think we could see Peter unmasked before we even get a good look at Wolverine or the rest of the X-Men!
As a huge fan, I’d absolutely love to see Peter Parker show up in a potential Venom game from Insomniac! It would be amazing. Plus, a Venom game would be fantastic for the developers, because it could finally wrap up all the loose threads from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – especially everything about the symbiotes and those hints about Knull and the Klyntar. It feels like there’s so much more story to tell there!
The later parts of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 heavily featured the lore surrounding Venom and the symbiotes, especially after Venom consumes Kraven. This means Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 has a lot to handle, potentially trying to do too much by including storylines for symbiotes, Green Goblin, Chameleon, and others. If Spider-Man 3 is meant to be the last game in the series—as is common with trilogies—it’s important that all plot threads are resolved satisfyingly, or players might be disappointed.
A fight between Venom and Carnage feels like the natural conclusion to a Venom game, given how popular they are as rivals. However, it would be a shame if the story thread from the Carnage side quest in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – involving Yuri and Peter’s complex connection – was ignored during the final battle. Utilizing that storyline could be a good way to include Spider-Man in a smaller-scale sequel before he takes center stage in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.
