New Skeleton Crew trailer: A coming of age story set far, far away

As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who’s been through more than one Death Star trench run, I must say that the new Skeleton Crew trailer has me buzzing like a TIE fighter on hyperdrive! The coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of an 80s Amblin-esque adventure feels like a perfect blend of my childhood nostalgia and the intergalactic epic I’ve grown to love.

The unexpected trend for Star Wars is releasing trailers without warning, and this morning’s unveiling of the new Skeleton Crew trailer took fans by surprise.

The upcoming trailer hints at a heartwarming journey about young characters leaving their safe environment to face perils, excitement, and self-exploration across an unpredictable cosmos. The series draws inspiration from the character-driven narratives of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, particularly those with 80s settings that seem prominent in this trailer. It also evokes memories of the 2017 screen adaptation of Stephen King’s coming-of-age horror novel “IT.

Besides the coming-of-age trope, here are some of the things that stand out from this trailer:

Skeleton Crew appears set to surpass other live-action shows in terms of its breathtaking visuals. From the abandoned ship that launches children off their home planet, to distant views of rockets taking flight against a backdrop of an unidentified planet or space station filled with hundreds of ships, this show stands out visually. It’s unclear what the production budget was, but based on the trailer, it seems no expense was spared in its creation. While the show is primarily aimed at kids, its awe-inspiring visuals should capture the interest of Star Wars enthusiasts across all age groups.

As a dedicated gamer, I can confidently say that Jon Watts and Christopher Ford stand behind their creation without any forced connections to the Mandoverse. Though it shares similarities with the Mandalorian era, such as occasional New Republic X-Wings and a nod to the pirates we encountered during Mando Season 3 (thanks to Jude Law), this new show carves its own path. If someone had told me it was set hundreds of years after The Mandalorian, I would’ve been convinced without batting an eye.

On their highly-evolved home planet, it appears the children hail from the Inner Parts of the galaxy, a region known for its advanced civilizations. This could very well make them inhabitants of one of the central planets, and given that they seem unprepared for the chaos of the Outer Rim – where “The Mandalorian” unfolds – it’s safe to assume their upbringing didn’t prepare them for such lawlessness.

From Old Republic credits to rare antiquities, Skeleton Crew is an Easter egg hunt for Star Wars enthusiasts and fans of every Star Wars era. I’m more interested in the final few seconds of the trailer, in which the kids find themselves in a room full of old artifacts, including carvings on the wall and a mask. Is this meant to be a Sith artifact and a nod to the Knights of the Old Republic? We’ll have to wait and see, but this room reminds me of Luthen Rael’s antique shop on Coruscant.

In summary, since there aren’t huge anticipations surrounding Skeleton Crew, it holds great promise to astound everyone. With its air of delight and excitement, it might just become an unexpected sensation this holiday season, reminiscent of the charm of Star Wars.

Skeleton Crew premieres December 3 on Disney.
