The release of the first part of the two-part finale to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga is nearly here, as filming has officially finished. We’re learning more and more details about the upcoming movie, giving fans a clearer picture of what to expect in this major crossover event. With just over a year until the film Doomsday arrives in theaters, we’ve now gotten the best glimpse yet of Robert Downey Jr. as the new villain, Doctor Doom.
Marvel Studios recently showcased some merchandise at an expo in Shanghai, and photos of a Doctor Doom poster quickly appeared online. Now, those images are available in full high definition, giving fans the clearest look yet at Robert Downey Jr.’s version of the iconic villain. This new peek reveals a fantastic live-action design for Doctor Doom and suggests some details about his character in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. Close examination of his armor reveals subtle clues that might connect him to two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s strongest heroes.
Doctor Doom Has a Connection to 2 Avengers
A new high-definition image of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom gives fans a better look at his character in Avengers: Doomsday. Many will be happy to see that his design is very similar to the classic comic book version, a welcome change after less successful attempts, like the 2015 film Fant4stic. But even more intriguing than the armor itself are the symbols on his chest. Doctor Doom’s cape clasps each feature a unique emblem, and each one appears to link him to a different Avenger from the main timeline. The symbol on his right is a six-pointed star that looks just like the one Captain Marvel wears. This connection is particularly interesting, and suggests Brie Larson’s character might play a role in the movie.
Another intriguing detail is a symbol on Doctor Doom’s cloak clasp. It’s a rectangular shape with a smaller piece extending from the bottom, and it bears a striking resemblance to Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir. Since Chris Hemsworth is confirmed to be in Avengers: Doomsday, this possible connection to Thor is particularly noteworthy for the film’s plot. The Marvel Cinematic Universe deliberately brought Mjölnir back after it was destroyed in Thor: Ragnarok, even reforming it to give Jane Foster Thor’s powers in Thor: Love and Thunder. This careful reintroduction of the hammer might have been a subtle hint at its connection to Doctor Doom, who appears to have the symbol on his armor. If Doctor Doom is linked to both Captain Marvel and Thor, it raises a big question: what impact will this have on the events of Avengers: Doomsday?
What Doctor Doom’s Avengers Connections Could Mean
Doctor Doom’s recent connections to Thor and Captain Marvel are concerning for the Avengers. One possibility is that Doom has defeated these heroes and is displaying symbols of their loss as trophies, perhaps even adding them to his armor. Given their incredible power, it would make sense for Doom to want to showcase victories over Thor and Captain Marvel specifically, intimidating anyone who sees them. Alternatively, these symbols might indicate that Doctor Doom has conquered the realms Thor and Captain Marvel represent—New Asgard and the Kree empire. This would mean he’s taken control of these factions in his own universe and is using their symbols to demonstrate his dominance.
The strange symbols on Doctor Doom’s armor have sparked a lot of debate. Some believe they’re just personal emblems, but a glimpse of the Latverian flag in The Fantastic Four: First Steps suggests these symbols aren’t connected to his home country. While Doom might be from a different universe, Marvel usually tries to maintain consistency across timelines. One symbol, which looks like Mjölnir, could also represent something else entirely. Interestingly, it’s similar to symbols worn by alternate versions of the Sorcerer Supreme, like Defender Strange, leading to the idea that Doom might be his universe’s Sorcerer Supreme. However, the MCU hasn’t officially designated a symbol for the Sorcerer Supreme, and the connection is weak. Therefore, the most reasonable explanation is still that the symbol represents Mjölnir.
When Will the First Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Drop?
It’s a little weird, honestly, how quiet Marvel’s been about Avengers: Doomsday. Aside from the initial cast reveal back in March and a few posts from the Russo Brothers, we haven’t seen much. But with over a year until the movie comes out, I’m sure they’re gearing up for a big marketing push. I’ve even heard whispers that the first trailer might drop before the end of the year – maybe in December! Considering filming finished a few months ago, that actually sounds about right. I’m expecting things to really ramp up in 2026, though – that’s when the full promotional blitz will probably hit.
The first trailers for Avengers: Doomsday will finally give fans a good look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. We’ll likely get a closer view of the strange symbols on his cape, hinting at trouble for at least two of the main Avengers. Even better, the trailers will reveal what powers Doctor Doom has in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Past versions of the character in live-action films only used a few of his comic book abilities, but the MCU seems ready to give us the full range. Expect Downey’s Doctor Doom to be skilled in magic, a brilliant inventor, and the ruler of a country – making him the most powerful live-action version of the character we’ve seen yet. With all these abilities and a possible connection to the Avengers from his own universe, Doctor Doom is becoming the scariest villain the MCU has ever created.
