Fans of the *Resident Evil* video game series haven’t always had the best experience with the movie adaptations. While the games have been scaring players since 1996, the films have often been disappointing for different reasons.
It’s telling that the 2002 film – now back on Prime Video in the UK for those wanting to watch it again – is often seen as a fun, if somewhat cheesy, classic and the best of the series. While the animated movies have been well-liked, they haven’t reached a wide audience. Recent efforts to revive the franchise, like the 2021 movie *Welcome to Raccoon City* and the 2022 Netflix series, haven’t been successful.
We get why you might be tired of yet another *Resident Evil* reboot, considering how many there have been. However, the recent news about the upcoming movie is encouraging, and we’re starting to think this one might actually be good.
What to Read Next
Paul Walter Hauser, recently praised for his performance in *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*, is now part of the cast for the upcoming *Resident Evil* movie. Zach Cregger is both writing and directing the film, according to *Deadline*.
Zach Cregger really impressed audiences this year with *Weapons*, which is among the best horror films released so far. Like his 2022 hit *Barbarian*, it proved he’s a talented director, and that excitement remains even though the *Resident Evil* series hasn’t been consistently strong.
Austin Abrams, who was fantastic as the troubled character James in *Weapons*, is also joining the project. His performance was a highlight of the film, perfectly balancing dark comedy and unsettling horror. With Paul Walter Hauser recently announced, the cast is already looking very strong.
Details about the upcoming *Resident Evil* project are still limited, but fans can be reassured that the creators aren’t simply retelling the story of one specific game.
“I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games,” he told Inverse. “It is obedient to the lore of the games, it’s just a different story. I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.”
We might regret getting our hopes up, as the saying goes, when the new *Resident Evil* movie comes out. But right now, everything we’re hearing suggests it could actually be a good adaptation of the game – and that’s giving fans reason to be excited.
Cregger explained to *The Big Picture* that his next project will be very different from *Barbarian* and *Weapons*. He wants to create something like *Evil Dead 2* – a film where he can be less focused on complex ideas and more focused on having fun with the camera and creating a wild, energetic experience.
Okay, so this movie is basically a straight-up journey. It starts with this character at one point and takes them all the way down, and I mean *down* – it feels like you’re going deeper and deeper into Hell with them, in real time. It’s a really immersive experience, like you’re right there with them.
And really, what sounds more Resident Evil than that?
Resident Evil is released in cinemas on 18 September 2026.
