New Overwatch 2 hero teased through wind wand sound effects

Some designs directly reflect the classic hero look, while others are more symbolic and open to interpretation.

A recent Overwatch 2 livestream showcased the game’s audio team, and principal sound designer Chris De La Pena hinted at a new hero currently in the works.

Overwatch 2 teases new hero

During the demonstration, De La Pena used a special tool called a ‘wind wand’ to create sounds for a new Overwatch 2 hero. He explained, “I wanted to show you how this works – I recently recorded it for a hero we’re still developing.”

He twirled the wind wand around and around, making clicking and buzzing noises. When he spun it the opposite way, it created a lower, richer sound.

“So listen for that coming up soon,” De La Pena added.

Is Overwatch 2 getting a wind hero?

As of today, it’s unclear if the new Overwatch 2 hero will have anything to do with wind. Not all the game’s weapons and sounds are based on things you’d find in real life, so it’s hard to say.

De La Pena explained that some of the audio recordings in Overwatch 2 directly reflect the game’s heroic characters, while others are more open to interpretation.

We’re focused on making our heroes feel incredibly real and giving players important clues through sound. Designing hero audio is complex – we consider what players hear both when controlling a hero directly and when observing others. A key element is creating unique sounds for each hero’s abilities and movements, which helps bring them to life.

De La Pena then demonstrated how the team developed the unique sounds for the characters Sojourn, Venture, Zenyatta, and Roadhog.
