Although the initial Outlander story is finishing up, the world of Outlander will continue with future stories and content.
The eighth and final season of the popular historical fantasy series Outlander began airing on March 6th. But the story doesn’t end there! Starz has started expanding the Outlander universe with a prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, which debuted in August 2025. With a second season of Blood of My Blood already planned, more spin-off shows are likely on the way.
During an interview with ScreenRant, Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts discussed the possibility of expanding the Outlander universe with new spinoff shows. While he didn’t reveal specifics about which characters, storylines, or time periods these spinoffs might focus on, Roberts confirmed the team is “definitely been talking about more spinoffs” and hinted that an announcement could be coming soon for fans.
ScreenRant asked Matt if the positive reception to ‘Blood of My Blood’ suggests fans would enjoy more stories set in the Outlander world. They were curious if there had been discussions about creating additional spinoffs, or if the focus was currently on developing storylines for Jamie and Claire’s parents.
We’ve been discussing potential spinoffs and exploring future directions for the show. I can’t share any specifics right now, but there could be announcements coming soon.
Although Blood of My Blood tells the stories of Jamie and Claire’s parents, the showrunner hints that they’re considering expanding the Outlander universe beyond just those characters. There are discussions happening about other spin-off series, and it sounds like Starz might be getting ready to announce some of these new projects soon.
As a longtime fan of the Outlander universe, I wasn’t shocked to hear rumblings of even more spinoffs. The success of Blood of My Blood this past summer was undeniable. Critics, myself included, really loved it – it’s currently sitting pretty with an 87% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And beyond the critical acclaim, Blood of My Blood consistently topped the charts on Starz’s streaming platform throughout its first season. It’s clear the franchise has a lot of life left in it.

The popular Starz show, which began in 2014, is based on Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels. While nine books are currently available, the tenth and final book in the main series is still to come. But the Outlander universe has grown beyond these original novels, offering lots of material for potential new shows and adaptations.
Beyond the main Outlander books, the franchise has expanded to include short stories focusing on different characters, a graphic novel, and a series of books starring Lord John Grey. There was even a point where a Lord John Grey TV series seemed likely – actor David Berry shared that a script was written and he had a contract for the show during Outlander’s fourth season. Although those plans were eventually cancelled, Berry remains hopeful about bringing a Lord John spinoff to television.
While there are hints of more shows being developed, it’s uncertain if the previously canceled Lord John series will be included. Currently, the biggest priority is the release of Outlander season 8. Once season 8 finishes airing—premiering March 6th and concluding May 8th—the focus will likely shift to potential future storylines and the previously mentioned expansions, including Blood of My Blood.
