While Steam has plenty of fantasy games, good open-world sci-fi options are rarer. Luckily, a new game from one developer is shaping up to be a strong competitor to No Man’s Sky, and it could also fill the void for players looking for a game like Pokémon.
Voidling Bound is a new creature-collecting game created by developers formerly of the Skylanders team. Set in a vast, open-world sci-fi setting, players will explore an alien planet, capturing and evolving unique creatures known as Voidlings. It appears to combine elements from popular games on Steam and is currently available for players to try.
Voidling Bound Is a Pokémon Replacement With No Man’s Sky Style Worlds
When Palworld launched in Early Access in January 2024, it quickly became clear there was a strong demand for this type of game. Palworld blended monster-collecting similar to Pokémon with the crafting and survival elements of Ark: Survival Evolved. Now, Voidling Bound seems to be following a similar path, but drawing inspiration from the science fiction settings of No Man’s Sky, which is a promising direction.
The game Voidling Bound features a unique premise: humans team up with alien creatures to combat a dangerous parasite. But instead of being scary, these alien creatures, called Voidlings, are incredibly cute, with a style reminiscent of games like Spyro the Dragon and Skylanders.
I’m really excited about Voidling Bound! It’s not just about catching creatures and exploring the world – though that’s a big part of it – but the combat looks amazing. It’s a third-person shooter, which is cool, but they’ve also added blocking and parrying, which I think will really make it stand out from other games like it.
Exploring the world in Voidling Bound is really enjoyable, thanks to simple platforming that makes getting around fun. While you explore, you can find wild eggs to hatch new Voidlings, giving you a good reason to thoroughly search every area.
Steam Users Can Try This Open-World Sci-Fi Game For Free
Although Voidling Bound isn’t officially available on Steam yet, players can try out a substantial demo. This demo lets you catch and battle Voidlings, explore the game world, complete quests, and even evolve your creatures to make them stronger.
The best part of the Voidling Bound demo is that your progress won’t be lost when the full game launches. Any Voidlings you evolve and become fond of will stay with you – you won’t have to start over when the demo finishes.
The continued progress from the demo suggests that Voidling Bound is getting closer to its official release. The game is currently scheduled for Q1 2026, making now a great time for players to begin collecting and training monsters in preparation for the full launch. This demo seems to be a good preview of what’s to come.
