Despite receiving harsh reviews from some critics who’ve called it “aggressively stupid” and “bafflingly bad”, the new Netflix survival thriller Thrash, starring Phoebe Dynevor and Whitney Peak, is currently a worldwide trending hit.
A powerful Category 5 hurricane hits a seaside town, causing widespread flooding and unexpectedly bringing sharks into the area. The film follows residents, played by Dynevor, Peak, and Djimon Hounsou, as they struggle to survive this terrifying new threat.
The thriller, written and directed by Tommy Wirkola, came out on Netflix last Friday, April 10th, and has quickly become popular. It’s currently the most-watched film on Netflix worldwide and in the UK, according to FlixPatrol.
Worldwide, Bruce Willis’s 1993 film Striking Distance is the closest competitor, but in the UK, audiences are really enjoying shark-themed movies – Jason Statham’s Meg 2: The Trench is currently number two.
While audiences have connected with the film Thrash, critics are split on its quality. Currently, it has a 35% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 31 reviews, and viewers give it an even lower score of 28%.

Digital Spy gave the show a two-star review, and we noted its winding path to a final title. It went from being called The Rising, then Beneath the Storm, and Shiver before landing on its current name. We pointed out that removing the first letter from ‘Thrash’ actually results in a name that’s surprisingly appropriate.
While a few scenes are successfully absurd, the movie doesn’t quite hit the mark as well as Alexandre Aja’s Crawl. Honestly, even Sharknado delivers a more purely ridiculous and fun escape.
According to RogerEbert.com, the film’s biggest flaw isn’t just its silly characters and plot, but rather how effortlessly lazy it feels. They found it lacked any real suspense or even the fun thrills you’d expect from a low-budget movie, ultimately calling it “aggressively stupid.”
Keith and the Movies described the film as a wildly silly, and sometimes confusingly bad, survival thriller. Despite its many flaws, they felt it still offered enjoyable, mindless entertainment.
While some critics weren’t impressed, TheWrap offered a more positive take. They admitted Thrash doesn’t make much sense, saying, “If it did, the movie would be bad!” Instead, they found it “arbitrary but too energetic to be truly bad.”
