New Netflix romantic drama is trending worldwide despite being branded “limp” and “uninspired”

Despite receiving unimpressive critic reviews, the romantic drama titled “My Oxford Year“, starring Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest on Netflix, has climbed to the top of global streaming rankings instead.

In the cinematic adaption of Julia Whelan’s 2018 novel, I step into the shoes of Anna De La Vega, an ambitious American student embarking on a journey to Oxford University in England. As I delve into my studies, I find myself developing a deep romantic connection with the local lad, Jamie Davenport, skillfully played by Mylchreest.

Starring Catherine McCormack and Dougray Scott, My Oxford Year has been a crowd-pleaser since its Netflix premiere on August 1st. Over the last few days, it’s been the most-watched film globally on the streaming platform, according to FlixPatrol.

Although the romantic drama, helmed by Iain Morris, has garnered a large audience, it’s been met with mixed opinions among critics, boasting an unimpressive 28% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 18 reviews.

The Guardian’s review stated that while Morris demonstrates competent directing skills, the script by Allison Burnett and Melissa Osborne lacks any genuine spark. Consequently, it is left to the main actors to create this energy, as the film was described as being “frothy” and “uninspired”.

In their review, Ready Steady Cut expressed that “My Oxford Year” seemed to be missing a certain liveliness in its narrative. Despite the beautiful settings of Oxford and other charming British landscapes, it didn’t quite manage to captivate them. Similarly, The New York Times described it as “flat” because it fell short of its intended impact.

The reviewer found the movie disappointing as it shifted from a heartfelt, feminist tale following a young woman who reignites her forgotten childlike aspirations, to an average drama centered around a charming boy who desperately needs saving.

According to RogerEbert.com, although “My Oxford Year” is an excellent promotion for studying abroad, it has some areas needing improvement. Meanwhile, TheWrap stated that, despite being polished and charming, the movie doesn’t fully commit to its central idea.

If psychological thrillers are more your preference over romantic stories, Netflix might just cater to your taste with the Indonesian movie “A Normal Woman“. This film follows a housewife who spirals into madness as she becomes convinced that she has an incurable disease.

My Oxford Year is streaming now on Netflix.
