New Netflix adaptation branded “slick” breaks into the trending UK chart despite mixed reviews
New Netflix show Bet has broken into the UK trending chart, despite a mixed reception from critics.
The show, labeled as “smooth” by its broadcaster, derives from the manga “Kakegurui” and delves into the lives of scholars at the prestigious St Dominic’s school, where the unwritten law of social standing is enforced through secretive gambling activities.
Following its release on Netflix last week, Bet now sits in the 10th spot in Netflix’s UK Top 10.

In his assessment for Varity, Aramide Tinubu pointed out that although it has a unique environment, the show Bet is found to be monotonous and tiresome, not providing any new material for followers of Kakegurui.
According to Decider’s Joel Keller, while it’s fine for a series to be stylish, the excessive focus on style in ‘Bet’ leaves little room for substance. This results in the show becoming tedious to watch throughout its 10-episode season.
In a more upbeat critique, Jonathon Wilson from Ready Steady Cut noted: “While there’s much in Bet that doesn’t quite hit the mark, it’s brimming with bold moves and engaging concepts, making it an enjoyable, character-rich viewing experience nonetheless.
The initial “Kakegurui” manga is penned by author Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Tōru Naomura. Subsequently, the television version was developed by Simon Barry.
