New MAFS Couples Doomed? Experts Weigh In on Show’s Future
Married At First Sight is set to return for its twelfth season on Monday.
Furthermore, although some relationships forged on the show have stood the test of time, numerous audience members continue to question the skills of the dating advisors when it comes to finding compatible partners.
Since its Australian debut in 2015, 82 couples have tied the knot on the hit reality show.
However, only seven couples have gone the distance, equating to a success rate of just 8.5%.
The statistics clearly demonstrate that the majority of unions depicted on the show don’t endure for more than a few months.
Contrarily, the relationship expert John Aiken, along with executive producers John Walsh and Alex Spurway, refute assertions suggesting that couples are purposely paired for dramatic purposes.
To Daily Mail Australia, Walsh unequivocally refuted claims of intentionally creating unsuitable pairs for amusement, clarifying: “We don’t deliberately mismatch anyone. Our involvement is evident in the couples. We understand why they are paired together.
As an ardent admirer, I can tell you that there are numerous factors at play when it comes to compatibility. Yet, when we initiate this fascinating exploration, just like everyone else, we find ourselves seated in anticipation, ready to observe the intriguing dance of connections that unfold.
Relationship specialist John Aiken agreed with Walsh, pointing out that the uncertain dynamics of human connections make this study an intriguing spectacle to watch.
In the moment they arrive, our confidence and optimism rise for everyone involved. What truly captivates us, though, is its inherent uncertainty – it’s always a rollercoaster ride. (He stated this.)
viewers, on the other hand, have expressed dissatisfaction regarding the series, suggesting that the professionals might be focusing more on creating dramatic situations rather than fostering authentic romantic relationships.
Throughout 11 seasons, only seven pairs have managed to stay together, and out of those, merely three have tied the knot officially.
Significant achievements have been made by couples like Cameron Merchant and Jules Robinson (from the sixth season), who are now husband and wife and parents to a son, as well as Bryce Ruthven and Melissa Rawson (from the eighth season), who are proud parents of twin boys.
Alex Spurway, the show’s producer, dismissed ideas that intentionally pairing up mismatched couples is a part of the program’s strategy, labeling such assertions as ‘easy’ and ‘unimaginative.’
If someone deliberately attempts to mislead or deceive, it shows a lack of effort and creativity, in my opinion. It’s uninspired. Moreover, our MAFS viewers are exceptionally intelligent; they can easily spot this kind of behavior. They’ve been following the show for nine seasons. (He said this.)
To ensure the experiment is a success, we require participating couples to remain united throughout. Our hope is that once they leave the experiment, they’ll continue to thrive in their relationship.
Regardless of its modest success, the Channel Nine dating program consistently ranks as one of Australia’s top reality TV shows, captivating viewers due to its blend of drama, sorrow, and fleeting romance that keeps them hooked on the screen.
Exploring from unexpected proposals to expanding households, let’s delve into the enduring romances depicted on this series – uncovering their keys to long-lasting affection.
Erin Bateman and Bryce Mohr, Season Two
The pair who have remained together longest on the show first met during the year 2016. After a short split in 2017, they’ve been virtually inseparable from each other since then.
Erin credits their success to staying out of the public eye.
She said during an interview with The D&M podcast, “It likely frustrates many people when they’re left out of the loop because the essence of reality TV is that afterward, you share all aspects of your life on social media.
She remarked: ‘It seems unusual to me. In my experience, some of the happiest people I’ve encountered in real life are not those who present their relationships online as a perfect fairytale.’
Erin also revealed that the couple’s relationship is built on authenticity.
‘The Bryce I got the day that I met him is the Bryce I have today. He hasn’t changed at all.’
Cam Merchant and Jules Robinson, Season Six
In the year 2019, Cam and Jules were the beloved pair on Married at First Sight, and their bond reached new heights when Cam proposed to Jules during their final vows ceremony, making it official in real life.
While Cam admitted Jules wasn’t his ‘type’ initially, their bond quickly grew.
During our encounter, a sense of tranquil warmth enveloped us as soon as our gazes connected, and any preconceived notions seemed to vanish into thin air, according to Cam’s account on The Babble podcast.
The couple married in November 2019 and welcomed their son, Oliver Chase, in October 2020.
Martha Kalifatidis and Michael Brunelli, Season Six
As a lifestyle expert, I can confidently say that Martha and Michael from MAFS have been one of the most resilient couples, leveraging our common family values to construct a robust relationship.
‘I can definitely imagine my future with Michael,’ Martha told TV WEEK.
In the year 2021, they made public their intention to marry, and in February 2023, they were blessed with their firstborn, whom they named Lucius Brunelli.
Bryce Ruthven and Melissa Rawson, Season Eight
Despite facing criticism while they were together, Bryce and Melissa ultimately disproved their detractors by creating a harmonious life for themselves.
or
In the face of controversy during their relationship, Bryce and Melissa managed to silence their critics by constructing a contented life together.
or
Throughout their time as a couple, Bryce and Melissa faced criticism but ultimately showed their doubters that they could build a satisfying life together.
Despite facing obstacles such as whispers of dishonesty and Bryce listing Melissa as his fourth choice for a bride, they openly expressed their affection for one another and eventually began a family together.
Back in July 2021, the couple made public their happy news: their engagement and twin pregnancy. Their sons, Levi and Tate, arrived earlier than expected in October 2021. Now, they reside in the vibrant city of Melbourne as a joyful family.
Kerry Knight and Johnny Balbuziente, Season Eight
As uninvited participants, Kerry and Johnny swiftly bonded and experienced one of the most effortless trips on the program.
Following the performance, Kerry moved to Brisbane to be nearer to Johnny, and they became engaged in July 2022. They exchanged vows in a heartfelt ceremony in January 2023, with MAFS alums Jules and Cam present as witnesses.
‘The amount of love we’ve received from the public has been absolutely amazing,’ Johnny told WHO.
Evelyn Ellis and Duncan James, Season Ten
Among the least expected couples, it was discovered that Evelyn and Duncan had formed a connection; they initially interacted with different participants during the study, but their bond deepened once the experiment concluded.
In my experience as a lifestyle aficionado, I found myself witnessing a beautiful bloom in their relationship after an intriguing ‘partner exchange’ incident. For what felt like forever, there was a whirlwind of curiosity and speculation surrounding them before they finally confirmed their bond to 9Honey.
On occasion, I experienced a sensation similar to warmth and fuzziness in my abdomen, prompting me to wonder, ‘What’s going on here?’ Duncan shared.
In a playful tone, I often find myself pondering over my morning awakenings on Instagram, and it tickles me to no end how life unfolds… Was it truly a SIGN-UP for an EXPERIMENT that led me to walk hand in hand with this remarkable man?
With their love story still unfolding, fans are eager to see where life takes them.
