New Lord of the Rings movie lands mixed first reactions

As a gamer and long-time fan of Middle-earth, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of “The Lord of The Rings: The War of The Rohirrim”. Having grown up with the original trilogy, I was excited to see how this animated prequel would stack up.

As an eager fan, I’ve just witnessed the debut of the latest animated “Lord of The Rings” film titled “The War of The Rohirrim”. Initial responses seem to be a blend of excitement and apprehension following its grand unveiling.

In a new movie directed by Kenji Kamiyama, we journey approximately 200 years prior to the initial trilogy’s timeline. The narrative centers around the tale of the renowned Rohan king, Helm Hammerhand, portrayed by Brian Cox.

After its first screening this week, people who’ve watched the film have shared their early opinions on various social media platforms.

Although some people are impressed with the “stunning” animations, others feel that the narrative could be more compelling and that it runs for an extended period.

As an enthusiastic fan, I can’t help but share that The War of the Rohirrim, as praised on X/Twitter by Nerds of Color, feels like the most captivating Lord of the Rings project since the original trilogy.

They stated that it exceeds any live-action Lord of the Rings project from the last ten years, weaving an enchanting tale full of themes like family, vengeance, and heritage. They described it as a captivating work reminiscent of Miyazaki’s fantasy style.

In a similar vein, Rafael Motamayor from IGN praised The War of the Rohirrim, stating it “really outshines” and suggesting that animation could be the key to future franchises in Middle-earth. He further emphasized, “Helm Hammerhand is undeniably the toughest character ever portrayed.

Britany Murphy from “Muses of Media” described the movie as an “amazing trip to Middle-earth”, appreciating the film’s “stellar voice acting, mesmerizing visuals, and exceptional direction by Kenji Kamiyama”. She also recommended it for viewing in theaters due to its “impressive action scenes and battles”.

#LOTR: The War of the Rohirrim” offers a thunderous comeback to Middle-earth, with breathtaking animation seamlessly blending Peter Jackson’s cinematic flair with anime style. This is a fresh take on “The Lord of the Rings” that feels like a long-awaited reunion, according to The Movie Podcast‘s Daniel Baptista. Despite its length, he finds it incredibly satisfying to be back in this magical world.

Other reviews were a mix, as Emily Murray from GamesRadar put it: “Even though #LOTR The War Of The Rohirrim isn’t particularly exceptional (it tends to follow a familiar pattern), I was still captivated – the visuals are simply stunning, with top-notch animation. Our main character Hera was quite endearing (the voice cast is excellent) and I’m eager to see where the story will lead us next.

In a positive note, Jeff Nelson complimented the animation, however, he expressed that the story didn’t seem to merit the duration of the film. He further stated, “The action scenes are skillfully arranged, but they lack substance in a fight sequence that calls for a more developed main character.

THE WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM” captures some of the enchantment of Middle-Earth, but the characters it follows fail to captivate us, making the magic seem weak. The story lacks unexpected twists and moves at a slow pace, leaving him disappointed.

InSession Film expressed a similar sentiment, stating: “I wanted to enjoy THE LORD OF THE RINGS: WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM more, but found it largely predictable and unexciting. The grandeur it displayed was indeed captivating at moments. There were some exceptional individual scenes, featuring impressive animation and moving music. However, overall, it fell short of expectations.

The Battle of Rohan in The Lord of the Rings series hits theaters on December 13, while The Lord of the Rings: The Quest for Gollum is scheduled for release in 2026.
