A new actor will play Aragorn in the upcoming Lord of the Rings film, it’s been confirmed. The Hunt for Gollum, a movie set between the events of The Hobbit and the original trilogy, is scheduled for release next year.
Okay, so a lot of the original cast is returning for the new project – Andy Serkis is back as Gollum and directing, which is awesome, and we’ll definitely see Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Gandalf (Ian McKellen) again. But unfortunately, it looks like Viggo Mortensen won’t be reprising his role as Aragorn this time around.
So, in the story, it’s all about the future king of Gondor trying to snag Gollum before he spills the beans to Sauron about where the One Ring is hidden. And now, Andy Serkis just announced they’re going to get a new actor to play Gollum, which is kinda wild!
He told ScreenRant that while there’s a lot of talk about who will take on the role, they’ve begun the process of finding a new actor and are making progress.
In addition to a still-unnamed lead actor, Kate Winslet will join the cast of The Hunt for Gollum in a secret role. Andy Serkis shared that they’re currently keeping most details about the film under wraps.

The director hinted that the movie will stay true to the established world and spirit of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, working with many of the same people behind those movies. He promised it will feel like a genuine Middle-earth adventure.

A new Lord of the Rings film, titled Shadow of the Past, is officially in the works. Comedian Stephen Colbert is co-writing the screenplay. The story will take place after Frodo’s death and will follow the adventures of hobbits Sam, Merry, and Pippin, along with Sam’s daughter, Elanor.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be released in December 2027.
