New Lord of the Rings movie brings back Christopher Lee’s Saruman

As a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan and someone who has spent countless hours immersed in Middle Earth’s lore, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that Philippa Boyens and the team would be using Christopher Lee’s voice for Saruman in The War of The Rohirrim. It’s like a piece of the original trilogy has been brought back to life, and it warms my heart to know that they’re honoring the late Sir Christopher’s legacy in this way.

Producer Philippa Boyens has verified that they plan to resurrect the deceased actor Christopher Lee, who passed away in 2015, by using his voice for the character of the wizard Saruman in the forthcoming animated movie titled “The Lord of The Rings: The War of The Rohirrim.

1600 years prior to Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, an animation directed by Kenji Kamiyama unfolds the tale of Helm Hammerhand, a revered King of Rohan (voiced by Brian Cox from “Succession”). In this narrative, Helm confronts Wulf, a powerful ruler of the Dunlendings, in a significant conflict.

In conversation with TheOneRing, Boyens shared how they managed to incorporate Lee’s voice, the actor who played Saruman in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films, following approval from his widow, Gitte.

In a conversation, Boyens mentioned that when they contacted Lady Lee (Gitte), she expressed what Peter Jackson might have been feeling deeply, which was that Sir Christopher Lee himself would have approved of the situation, as he put it.

delving into his recordings, I found myself stepping back in time, immersed in the warmth of his voice – not just reciting lines, but conversing with us during our sessions. We drew inspiration from a phrase in “The Hobbit,” specifically, “‘Are you in need of aid, my fair one?’ A rephrased take on that timeless line.

She continued: “And we thought, okay that’s a line, we can see how many takes he did of that. Can we use it? Can we find a new read on it and change it up a little bit. And our brilliant guys did that. But it is an authentic bit of Christopher Lee performance that it’s based on.

Indeed, the internet might argue that countless individuals could mimic Chris Lee’s voice, but here’s the thing – I strongly disagree. I’m thrilled beyond words that we opted for his real voice, and it truly is remarkable,” Boyens finished off.

From what I gather, Saruman’s part in this animated adaptation remains a bit vague, but based on what Peter Jackson’s co-writer, Fran Walsh (Boyens is actually their collective pen name), hinted, it appears that the White Wizard might make a brief appearance.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will release in cinemas on December 13, 2024.
