New look at Maul: Shadow Lord and never-before-seen Dave Filoni sketches revealed at SDCC

It’s the time of San Diego Comic-Con again! Despite the fact that Star Wars won’t be making a significant appearance this year, the distant galaxy still has surprises in store for enthusiasts.

Although Star Wars might not be prominent at this year’s SDCC, there are still exciting things coming from the galaxy for fans to check out!

This year, Lucasfilm Animation is showcasing a display that spans two decades of Star Wars animation, featuring initial drawings from shows like “The Clone Wars” and “The Bad Batch,” as well as sneak peeks at what’s in store for the future of the franchise.

You’ll get your first glimpse of Darth Maul in the forthcoming animated show titled “Maul: Shadow Hunter,” available on StarWars.com.

The upcoming series, slated for release next year, will delve into the life of the former Sith Lord as he struggles to maneuver through the criminal underworld within the new Galactic Empire. According to Sam Witwer, who shared insights about the show, it’s a story of villains versus even more ruthless adversaries. Our villainous characters remain villainous; it won’t be a series where you suddenly empathize with Maul because he turns out to be harmless or misunderstood. Instead, the narrative explores whether Maul is as evil as Sidious or Vader. Interestingly, from the Sith perspective, Maul has flaws, and these imperfections represent a form of humanity that emerges at different stages. Some of this humanity may have been absent in him during his earlier days in the Clone Wars, but due to experiences he’s had, he’s reconsidered many things.

At San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), fans will be privileged to view exclusive sketches crafted by Dave Filoni, some of which have been previously unveiled on StarWars.com. Among these is a sneak peek into Clone Force 99, later known as the Bad Batch that has become so familiar to us all.

One of my favorites features young Ahsoka Tano, depicted in the comic series “Tales of the Jedi“, together with her mother. What makes this image particularly appealing (apart from Ahsoka being incredibly cute) is the inclusion of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ emblem on the page, a team cherished by Dave.

Trivia: At one point, he created jerseys specifically for their Star Wars theme evenings, an event showcased in a six-minute long documentary available to view.

As a devoted movie critic, I’ve been left pondering the question yet again after witnessing the captivating visuals displayed at San Diego Comic Con: When will we finally be gifted with a Dave Filoni artbook? With his exceptional talent shining brightly as one of Lucasfilm’s great artists, it’s high time for fans to delve deeper into the creative mind that has breathed life into some of our favorite Star Wars stories.

As a devoted fan, it’s my dream to one day have the opportunity to own a book that offers a peek into George Lucas’ early insights on “The Clone Wars,” complete with his notes and Dave Filoni’s artwork. This would truly be a treasure trove for any Star Wars enthusiast. I eagerly await such a release from Lucasfilm Publishing, although for now, I’ll make do with the excitement that comes with visiting the SDCC booth.
