New ‘Lanterns’ teaser features Green Lantern superpowers and a Laura Linney appearance

HBO Max is here to remind you that “Lanterns” is a superhero show.

The streaming service shared a new trailer on Monday for its upcoming DC superhero crime series. The trailer shows more of Hal Jordan using his Green Lantern powers and introduces a new, enigmatic character played by Laura Linney.

According to Kyle Chandler’s character, a seasoned superhero, this ring is the most powerful weapon imaginable. He tells new recruit John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, that knowing when to use it is the key to everything.

The 15 TV shows we’re most excited to watch in 2021

The Times TV team selects the 15 shows we’ll be watching when they premiere or return in 2021.

This new preview shows Jordan using his power ring in more detail – he creates shields, flies, and even makes fake money. In the comic books, Green Lanterns are famous for these rings, which allow them to conjure up anything they can think of using energy.

“Power like that, shouldn’t you have to work for it?” Stewart asks of his mentor.

Damon Lindelof, one of the creators of ‘Lanterns,’ has apologized for calling the color ‘Green’ silly, a comment that upset comic book fans and writer Grant Morrison.

I was so excited to see Linney confirmed as part of the cast in the new teaser! They’re keeping her role a secret for now, but it definitely looks like she’ll have some kind of connection to Stewart’s character. And a quick shot of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner! It’s cool to see him continuing that role from the “Superman” movie coming out next year and “Peacemaker” – he really nails it.

Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones are also part of the cast of “Lanterns.”

“Lanterns” will premiere Aug. 16 on HBO and HBO Max.
