New Judge Dredd Movie in the Works From Thor: Ragnarok Director

A new Judge Dredd movie is now in the works.

John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra developed the character of Judge Dredd, who debuted in the British weekly comic anthology titled 2000 AD during the late ’70s. He soon gained prominence within pop culture and starred in two live-action films: Sylvester Stallone’s Judge Dredd from 1995 and Dredd, featuring Karl Urban in 2012.

Now, per The Hollywood Reporter, a new Judge Dredd movie is in the works from Taika Waititi.

What else do we know about the new Judge Dredd movie?

Drew Pearce, known for his work on films like Iron Man 3 (2013), Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015), Hobbs & Shaw (2019), The Fall Guy (2024), among others, is currently penning the screenplay for the upcoming Judge Dredd movie.

Chris Kingsley, Jason Kingsley, and Ben Smith from Rebellion Developments, along with Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, Jeremy Platt, Natalie Viscuso, and Pearce are collaborating on the movie’s production.

At present, specific details about the plot are being kept confidential. However, according to an article by The Hollywood Reporter, the project is expected to draw inspiration more from the comics than previous screen adaptations, focusing on world-building and dark humor. This sci-fi blockbuster aims to resonate with contemporary culture while still providing an enjoyable experience. The ambition is that this film will kickstart a Dredz universe, allowing for further movies and shows across multiple platforms.

For quite some time, Waititi and Pearce have been close companions with a shared passion for the Judge Dredd comic series. They’ve been eagerly searching for a collaborative project for years.

Taika Waititi is primarily recognized for directing Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). However, he garnered an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2020 for the film Jojo Rabbit. His diverse filmography also encompasses Eagle vs Shark (2007), Boy (2010), What We Do in the Shadows (2014), Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016), and Next Goal Wins (2023).
